How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?
Forests are the lungs of the earth, provide the skeleton for our homes, and have been an essential source of energy for man over time. More importantly, these wonders of photosynthesis have developed adaptations to their varied environments and are the home to countless species from the tropical rainforests to the snow-swept taiga. This lesson explores the diversity and importance of trees to all life on earth.
Forests
Describe each of the following for the coniferous forest (taiga.)- Climate and location, primary vegetation, soil, animal life and human impact
Describe each of the following for the deciduous forest.- Climate and location, primary vegetation, soil, animal life and human impact
Identify the features that divide a deciduous forest into three vertical zones (canopy, understory, floor)
What are the basic features of a temperate evergreen forest?
Distinguish between tropical dry forest and tropical rainforest.
Why is the soil in rainforests so poor?
Rainforest trees are often gigantic. What are the other features found in rainforest trees?
Describe/diagram the vertical layering of a rainforest into 5 layers.
How do each of these terms relate to life in the rainforest? (epiphyte, arboreal, brachiate)
Describe the causes and effects of change in humanity’s relationship with rainforests.
Warm Ups, etc:
Wood - examine the basic structure of trees, with a focus on the anatomy of trees that show seasonal growth patterns.
Vacation Wonderlands - review the features and interesting points of examples of a variety of biomes.
Instruction, Presentations, Assignments, Activities, etc:
DiB...People, Not Lightning - students analyze an image sharing information about the location, number and causes of wildfires.
Notes - Taiga and Deciduous Forests
Handout - Tropical Forests - highlight the similarities and differences between tropical dry and tropical rainforests, with a focus on the adaptations of plants and animals to forest life.
Demo: Data Visualization - Forest area as % of land area - using the mouse to hover over map will give specific data, chart on the right
