Introduction
Let's first learn how to make the connection between the "real" world and the
"Digital" world. Did you know that the decisions you make in your digital world affect
you as much as those made in the real world? In fact, your digital
decisions and behaviors can affect you more and for longer than decisions that
you make in the real world--even with prospective employers and college applications!
In this lesson, you will learn the importance of being a responsible digital citizen.
You will learn about potential online dangers and how to stay safe
using instant messaging and how to protect your reputation.
Step 1: Internet Safety Tips and Protecting Your Reputation Online
Before we begin, watch the short videos below:
Safe Web Surfing: Top Tips for Kids and Teens Online
and
TOP 10 ONLINE SAFETY TIPS!
1. People can save everything that is said online.
2. Only say online, what you’d be willing to say in person.
3. Be careful what pictures and videos you post/upload online.
4. Kids should tell a trusted adult if they feel they are in an uncomfortable situation. Your parents, guardian, grandparents, teachers, etc. should always know where you are going online (URL) and what you are doing.
5. Keep all of your passwords private.
6. Don’t open anything from people you do not know.
7. Never give out your personal information online. Where you live, your phone number, the school you attend, etc.
should always be kept private.
8. Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook are NOT secure, even when set to private.
9. Not everyone online is who they say they are. You should never agree to meet anyone who you don't know.
10. Use common sense!
Step 2: Learning What it Means to be Safe Online
· Do you know the risks of posting inappropriate pictures, videos,
or messages about yourself online?
· Take the online Internet safety guidelines quiz to
learn about more rules to keep you safe online.
Step 3: Google Drive
Log into your Gmail account.
On the black toolbar on the top of the page, select Drive
Click on Create and select Document.
Once your new document loads, rename this document Internet Safety Tips
In the upper right corner type your name, date, hour and the title AUP
Number your document 1-10
Step 4: Recording Internet Safety Tips
You will now be introduced to The Cyber Spy Game.
While playing this game, you will be using your Google Drive document to record
AT LEAST 10 internet safety tips that you learned about while playing this game.
You will automatically have 7 safety tips after playing the The Cyber Spy Game.
You will then explore Netsmartz to come up with 3 additional online safety tips. You may
play games, watch videos, etc. to infer three additional safety tips.
Once you have found all 10 of your safety tips and have typed them onto your
Google Document, you should then continue to explore the Netsmartz (games and videos).
When you are done, you will have a total of 10 safety rules
recorded on your Google Drive Document.
Step 5: Creating a Web Based Presentation
Google Drive and Zoho Show are all FREE online tools that help you to create
and deliver presentations. Because these presentation tools are web based, you can take your presentations wherever you go, access them from any computer and review, edit, share and deliver presentations on the go.
Using the information that you've learned in Steps 1 & 2, you are going to create
a 12 slide Presentation using Google Drive: Click here for instructions on how to use
Google Drive.
