Introduction

Let's first learn how to make the connection between the "real" world and the "Digital" world.

Did you know that the decisions you make in your digital world affect you as much as those made in the real world?

In fact, your digital decisions and behaviors can affect you more and for longer than decisions that

you make in the real world--even with prospective employers and college applications!

In this lesson, you will learn the importance of being a responsible digital citizen.

You will learn about potential online dangers and how to stay safe using instant messaging and how to protect your reputation.

Step 1: Internet Safety Rules and

Protecting Your Reputation Online

Before we begin, watch the video - Protecting Reputations Online

TOP 10 ONLINE SAFETY TIPS!

1. People can save everything that is said online.

2. Only say online, what you’d be willing to say in person.

3. Be careful what pictures and videos you post/upload online.

4. Kids should tell a trusted adult if they feel they are in an uncomfortable situation. Your parents, guardian, grandparents, teachers, etc. should always know where you are going online (URL) and what you are doing.

5. Keep all of your passwords private.

6. Don’t open anything from people you do not know.

7. Never give out your personal information online. Where you live, your phone number, the school you attend, etc. should always be kept private.

8. MySpace, Twitter, and Facebook are NOT secure, even when set to private.

9. Not everyone online is who they say they are. You should never agree to meet anyone who you don't know.

10. Use common sense!

Step 2: Learning What it Means to be Safe Online

Step 3: Recording Internet Safety Rules

You will now be introduced to The Cyber Spy Game. While playing this game, you should have a Word Processing Document

open (or some form of taking notes). You will be recording AT LEAST 10 internet safety rules that you learn about

while playing this game.

You will automatically have 7 safety rules after playing the The Cyber Spy Game.

You should then read over the information on this webpage again and come up with 3 additional online safety rules.

When you are done, you will have a total of 10 safety rules recorded.

Instructions:

  • Open up a new Word Processing document and number it 1-10

  • Taking the information that you learned from The Cyber Spy Game, you will need to figure out the internet safety rule that the game is teaching you about.

  • When you figure out a safety rule, you will need to record in your Word Processing document.

  • You will need to explore and discover a total of 10 rules (7 while playing The Cyber Spy Game and 3 while exploring this webpage or while exploring NetSmartz).

  • Once you find all 10 rules, save your document as Internet Safety Rules into your My Documents folder.

Step 4: Creating an Internet Safety Sliderocket Presentation

Sliderocket is a FREE online presentation tool that helps you to create and deliver presentations.

You can now take your presentations wherever you go, apply new ideas instantly, review, edit, share and deliver presentations on the go.

Using the information that you learned in Steps 1 & 2, you will create a 12 slide Presentation using Sliderocket.

Once you access Slide rocket, you will first need to create an account:

Ø Go to Sliderocket

Ø Click on Sign Up (Upper right corner)

Ø Underneath Lite click Choose Plan

Ø Enter your Email Address (if you do not have one you can just make one up)

Ø Choose and enter a 6-20 digit password (your student number would make a great password).

Ø Re-Enter your password

Ø Click on Create My Account

Make sure you write down your username and password somewhere safe so that you don’t forget them.

Creating a New Presentation

Ø Click on New

Ø A New Presentation box will pop up

Ø In the box that says Name, type in the title Internet Safety Rules

Ø Select a Theme: Please choose the White theme

Ø Click Ok

Ø Begin creating your presentation

Adding Pictures/Images

You must save any picture/image that you want to use to you’re my Pictures Folder

Once the Picture/Image is saved:

Ø Click on the slide that you want to insert the picture on

Ø Click on Picture on the left side of the screen

Ø Select Import Media

Ø Choose the picture/image that you would like to upload and click on Open

Formatting Your Text

All text formatting tools will be located to the right of your slide.

Select the text you want to format and then choose the formatting feature you wish to use.

Adding Annimation

Ø Click on the text or image you wish to format

Ø On the right hand side click on fx

Ø Click on Add Effects

Ø Choose the effect that you wish to apply

Saving Your Work

On the Slide Rocket tool bar (not your web browser toolbar) select File-> Save As

Requirements For Your Presentation

· Slide 1- Introduction or Title slide. You will have the title Internet Safety Rules, your name (first name and last initial only) and hour. Don't forget to add a backgrounds, transitions, animations, pictures, graphics, and/or images.

· Sides 2-11- Each slide will contain 1 internet rule that you discovered when playing and researching the

The Cyber Spy Game. You will need to list the rule and then give a detailed explanation of what the rule means.

(i.e. Keep Personal Information Private. You should never share your name, address, phone number, and school you attend with people you don't know online).

· You MUST add at least 1 background, picture, graphic, and/or image to each slide and 1 transition to each slide.

· Slide 12- Bibliography: You will now use the Citation Machine to create a citation for the

The Cyber Spy Game website that you used to explore and research your internet safety rules.

To Create a Citation:

  • Go to Citation Machine

  • Choose MLA (in the upper left corner)

  • In the column on the left, select Web Document

  • Fill in the blank boxes as follows:

- Author or Editor Name(s): These two boxes should be left blank

- Title of Webpage: The Case of the Cyber Criminal (Game)

- Title of Website: OnGuardOnline.gov

- Date Published or Last Revised: 2012

- Publishing Organization: Leave Blank

- Date Retrieved : This is todays date

(the date should already be entered automatically)

- Web URL: http://onguardonline.gov/media/game-0013-case-cyber-criminal

  • Click Submit to create your citation. Remember, if you cannot locate ALL of the information for the image/picture that is okay, you will just leave the boxes of the information you cannot find blank. The title, year, and URL are the most important.

  • Copy (CTRL + C) your completed citation.

  • Go to your Sliderocket presentation and add a text box to slide 12. Add a colorful background and then a text box.

  • Click INSIDE the text box and paste your completed citation into the text box (CTRL + V).

Make sure you save your work. To do this you will click on Save-

Don’t forget to give your presentation a title.

Be sure you change the colors, size and style of the font on each slide. Do not forget to add backgrounds, transitions and pictures/images to each slide.

To access a presentation that you already started: Log into Slide Rocket and click on the presentation that you wish to Edit.
