Iconic Story Multimedia Project

Objectives

    • Students will be able to use Microsoft Word to create a fictional story.

    • Students will be able to locate images online and save them to their My Pictures folder.

    • Students will be able to upload their saved images, create a movie about their story, and add audio to their story using Windows Movie Maker.

Iconic Story Writing

An icon is a picture or image that represents something. For example, the wastebasket on the computer screen represents the Recycle Bin.

Today you will be writing an iconic story of your own (similar to the one shown below).

Creating Your Iconic Story in Microsoft Word

Step 1: Locating and Inserting Images

  • Use Google to locate 10 appropriate images that you like.

  • When you find the images, right click on them and save them to you’re My Pictures folder as the picture’s name.

  • Open up a new Microsoft Word document

  • Click View-> Header and Footer and type your name in the Header. Click Close

  • Click-> Insert->Picture->From File and locate one of the 10 images. Click Insert

  • Double Click on the image. Select Layout, Select In Front of Text. Click OK

  • Resize the image to be about 1 inch wide.

  • Drag image to the top of your document (All images will be placed at the top of the page in 2 rows- 5 images in each row).

  • Repeat this process for all 10 images

  • Once the images are in place press Enter 3 times.

Step 2: Producing Your Story

  • Create a Title for your story and type By: Your Name under the title.

  • Highlight the title and byline and Center, Bold, and change the font to 16.

  • Hit Enter and click the Left Alignment button on the Formatting Toolbar

  • You will now type out a short story about the 10 images at the top of your document. You must mention each image at least twice in your story.

  • When you mention the names of your images, replace the word with a Copy of your image (to copy your image: Click on your image, right click on your image and select Copy. To Paste your image: Double Click on the word you would like to replace and highlight it. Right click on the highlighted word and select Paste). All of your images need to be about the same size.

Step 3: When You Think You Are Done

  • Click on the Spelling and Grammar button

  • on the Formatting Toolbar and check your story for spelling and grammar errors.

  • Read your Iconic Story out loud to yourself and make sure it makes sense.

  • Save your story to you’re My Documents folder as Iconic Story

  • Print your story (so that you can use it to complete your movie).

Step 4: Transforming Your Story Into a Movie Using Windows Movie Maker

    • Click on Start-> Programs-> Windows Movie Maker.

    • The first slide will be the title of your story. Under Edit Movie click on MakeTitles or Credits. Select Title at the Beginning of the Movie

  • Type in the title of your movie and By: Your Name

  • (don't forget to capitalize your title and name)

  • You will now insert your story into your movie along with one of your iconic images to go along with each part of your story. One slide will be a few sentences of your story and the next will be a picture to go along with that part of your story.

    • Typing Out Your Story: You will need to click on the title slide and then under Edit Movie you will select Add Titles or Credits AFTER Slide. Be sure that you click on the LAST slide you completed before you select Add Titles or Credits AFTER Slide. Make sure you change the font style, color, background, and animation for each slide.

    • Inserting Pictures Into Your Movie: Click on Insert Pictures under the Capture Video heading. Locate the picture/image you want to upload then select Import. You should now see a thumbnail image of your picture. Drag the picture(s) to your movie storyboard so that it follows your story.

  • When you are done creating your story and inserting pictures to go along with your story be sure to play your movie and preview it, making sure that your story is in the right order, makes sense, and that you check it for spelling/Grammar errors.

  • You are now ready to record your story.

    • Recording Your Story: Get a microphone from your teacher and plug it into the microphone plug on your computer (NOT the headphone plug). Be sure you plug the microphone in all the way.

    • Click on the microphone icon just above your movie's storyboard.

    • When you are ready to record click Start Narration. You can stop recording and start over at any time by clicking Stop Narration and then click Cancel.

    • If your slides need to be longer (or go slower), simply extend them by creating a red double arrow in between the slide that needs to be longer and drag it to the right.

    • Once you have fully completed the narration of your story, click Stop Narration and save it as Iconic Story Narration to your MY DOCUMENTS folder. Click Save.

  • You now need to add your narration to your Iconic Movie.

    • Adding Narration To Your Iconic Movie: Under Capture Video click on Import Audio or Music. Locate your Iconic Movie Narration and then select Import. Your narration will show up as a thumbnail above your storyboard. Drag your narration to the beginning of your story.

    • MAKE SURE YOU LISTEN TO AND WATCH YOUR ENTIRE ICONIC MOVIE BEFORE YOU SAVE IT TO MAKE SURE EVERYTHING IS RIGHT> ONCE YOU SAVE YOUR MOVIE YOU CANNOT MAKE ANY CHANGES!

  • Saving Your Iconic Movie:

    • Click on File-> Save Project As and name your project Iconic Movie. You will be saving your movie to your My Videos folder.

    • You must now click on Save to My Computer under the Finish Movie heading

    • 1. Enter a File Name For Your Saved Movie: Name your Movie Iconic Movie

    • 2. Choose a Place to Save Your Movie: Click Browse and locate your My Documents Folder.

    • Click Next and then Click Next again. Your movie will take a few minutes to save.

When you are done with everything, you will print your original Iconic Story (in color if you'd like) and hand it into your hours tray.
