What is Technology?
Technology is the making, usage, and knowledge of tools, machines, or methods of organization in order to solve a problem or perform a specific function. Technology helps to make things you do in life easier.
Anything that helps solve a problem or makes your life easier is technology.
What Are Assistive Technologies?
Assistive technologies help people with limitations (or disabilities) get around easier, communicate better, live more independently and become more active in their communities.
Assistive technology devices are any item, piece of equipment, or product system (software) used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of a person who has a disability or multiple disabilities.
Read this article and linked attachments to learn more about Assistive Technologies.
Anything that helps a person who has a disability solve a problem or makes their life easier is an assistive technology.
Examples of assistive technologies: Glasses, Hearing Aids, E-Readers, Screen Magnifiers, Crutches, Talking Calculators, etc.
Directions
Step 1: Researching An Assistive Technology
Use your favorite search engine and information from the article that you read above to learn about the various assistive technologies. Choose one specific assistive technology to research (you will be designing you’re a presentation around this technology).
Remember, this is a RESEARCH project!
You will choose one Assistive Technology to research and create a presentation about. Below you will find multiple websites to help you choose the assistive technology to research.
Here is a list of 25 Incredible Assistive Technologies
Text To Speech Applications
Google Drive Add Ons
ios App Store or Android Marketplace (if you choose to research apps, you must research a minimum of 3 apps).
You may choose to research any assistive technology EXCEPT for the following:
Eyeglasses
Contact Lenses
Wheelchairs/Wheelchair Ramps
Crutches/Casts/Canes/Bandaids
VozMe
Hearing Aids
Talking Calculator
Seeing Eye/Service Animals
Prosthetic Body Parts
Step 2: Collecting Information About the Assistive Technology You Chose to Research
Download THIS DOCUMENT containing the requirements for this assignment below (at the bottom of this web page). You will be using this document to create a mind map of all of the information you researched and collected. ** OPEN the DOCUMENT BELOW IN YOUR DRIVE: Click on the Title of the document and select Open to open, save and edit your document in your Google Drive.**
The questions within this document all need to be researched and answered. Feel free to add more information as the more specific information that is added, the better grade you will get. Remember, you are teaching me everything about the Assistive Technology you chose.
Step 3: Creating a Mind Map About the
Information You Researched
What is Bubbl.us?
Bubbl.us is a free, web based program that allows you to brainstorm and easily create professional-quality mind maps and flowcharts.
Creating a Bubbl.us Account
1. Go to Bubbl.us
2. If you have an account Sign In
3. If you don't have an account, click on Create Account
**WRITE DOWN YOUR USER NAME AND PASSWORD SO YOU DON'T FORGET IT!
Creating a Flow Chart About the Assistive Technology You Researched
Getting Started
1. Double click on the screen to create the shape(s) that you will use to create your flow chart.
2. There are two different types of Bubbles Parent and Child. You can distinguish between the two because they are different colors.
3. To connect your bubbles, click on the bottom of the bubble OR press CTRL+Enter
Requirements
Your Bubbl.us flowchart must have the following requirements:
A bubble that contains the title of your Researched Assistive Technology (i.e. Watch Minder).
Your title should be bigger than the rest of the font sizes in your Bubbl.us
You should have at least one Bubble for each of the questions on the worksheet that you downloaded below. The questions do not need to be included, but the researched information (or answers to the questions) should be included and written in complete sentences.
Each shape and connector in your flow chart should be colorful and creative looking with different font styles, sizes and colors.
Saving & Exporting Your Bubbl.us
When you have completed your History of Computer Technology flow chart, click on the arrow to the right of Save and select Save As in the upper right corner.
Give your flow chart a title (i.e. Assistive Technology)
Click on the Save As arrow (top right), Select Save As JPEG.
In the lower, left corner a download box will pop up. Click on the arrow on the right side of the box and select Open
Once the JPEG image opens, Click on File-> Save As and save the .jpeg image of your Bubbl.us to your My Pictures folder.
Step 4: Creating a Prezi About the
Assistive Technology You Researched
Fill in all of the required information & click on Create Your Free Public Account.
Click on New Prezi
Select the template that you would like to use for your presentation.
Begin creating your Assistive Technology Prezi.
Requirements For Your Entire Project
This information is also located on a worksheet that can be downloaded at the bottom of this page:
1. Name of the assistive technology that you researched.
2. What disability or disabilities does your assistive technology target?
3. Describe and/or define what this disability is. Be specific!
4. Describe what your assistive technology does.
5. How could this technology benefit someone with limitations (disabilities)?
6. How could this technology benefit everyone (even those who do not have a disability)?
7. Cost or average cost of the assistive technology you've researched?
8. Write 1-2 paragraphs about the assistive technology that you chose to research. Include information that you feel is important (i.e. What learning area would this technology assist the student with? Who invented your assistive technology and when was it invented?). These paragraphs should summarize NEW information that you learned about your assistive technology. You should not repeat any information that you have already included in your presentation. Your paragraph(s) should be longer than 1-2 sentences.
9. Locate at least 2 images/pictures to use use in your Prezi. These pictures should represent your assistive technology in some way. You will need to right click on the pictures you choose and save them to your My Pictures folder (do not paste them on this document).
10. Insert or embed your completed, exported Bubbl.us .JPG image onto your Prezi. Make sure your Bubbl.us flow chart is part of your Prezi path (or presentation).
Step 5: Uploading Your Bubbl.us to Your Prezi
· Click on Insert-> Image and Select File
· Locate your Bubbl.us Mindmap and click Open
· Place Your Bubbl.us somewhere on your Prezi and include it in your final Path
Step 6: Sharing Your Prezi
In order to receive a grade for this assignment,
you MUST share your Prezi with me.
To Share your Prezi with me, follow the directions below.
While in edit mode in your Prezi:
Click on the Share icon in the upper right corner
When pop up appears, click on Create New Link
When the next pop-up appears, type Ms. Maurus in the text box underneath, Enter the company or viewer's name for your own records.
