How To Using Gliffy

Objective

  • Student will be able to create a How To flow chart using Gliffy demonstrating how to specifically do a task.

What is Gliffy?

Gliffy is a free, web based program that allows you to easily create professional-quality flowcharts, diagrams, floor plans, technical drawings, and more!

Step 1: Creating a Gliffy Account

1. Go to Gliffy

2. If you have an account click on Log In

3. If you don't have an account, in the upper, right corner click on Try It Now!

4. Click on Create Document (in the bottom right corner)

5. On the left hand side, select Flow Chart

6. Before you even get started , click on Save in the upper right corner

7. A pop up will show up saying Sign Up For a Free Pro Account. Fill out all of the required information as follows:

· Email Address: Enter your email address. This will be your username

· Enter a Password: Enter a 6-8 digit password that will be easy for you to remember

· Confirm Your Password: Re-Type your Password

· Account Name: This is optional, but feel free to give your account a name such as Joe’s Gliffy For School

· Check the box in front of I agree to the Terms of Service

· Select Sign Up Now!

· WRITE DOWN YOUR USER NAME AND PASSWORD SO YOU DON'T FORGET IT!

** By signing up, you will have access to your account for 30 days. After the 30 days, tou will still be able to use Gliffy for free, but you will not be able to save the Gliffy’s you create. You will only be able to take screen shots of your Gliffy’s and, at times, copy and paste them into other documents.

Step 2: Creating a How To Flow Chart Using Gliffy

You are going to be creating a How To flow chart, describing in detail how to do something. Your How To should be creative and have At Least 5 steps. Click Here for some How To Topic ideas

Getting Started

1. Click on the shape(s) that you want to use in your flow chart.

2. You can select different skins (on the left side bar) to get either Classic or Fresh shape styles.

3. To connect your shapes, use the connectors on the top tool bar.

Requirements

Your Gliffy flowchart must have the following requirements:

  • A shape that contains the title of your How To topic (your title should be bigger than the rest of the font sizes in your Gliffy

  • A minimum of 5 (you can always have more) connected shapes, creatively describing in detail how to do something.

  • Each shape and connector in your flow chart should be colorful and creative looking with different font styles, sizes and colors.

  • Again, you MUST bespecific and detailed when explaining your How To topic

Saving Your How To

  • When you have completed your How To flow chart, click on Save in the upper right corner.

  • Give your flow chart a title (i.e. How To...)

  • Click on File-> Export as JPEG

  • In the lower, left corner a download box will pop up. Click on the arrow on the right side of the box and select Open

  • Once the JPEG image opens, click on the File->Save As and save your Gliffy to your My Pictures folder.

Step 4: Adding Your Gliffy to Your Electronic Portfolio

As part of your final grade you MUST like your How To Gliffyto your 8th Grade Electronic Portfolio.

To link your Gliffy to your Electronic Portfolio follow the directions below:

  • Log into your Electronic Portfolio

  • Click on New Page (at the top of your portfolio)

  • Name Your Page: How to Gliffy and click Create

  • Once on your How to Gliffy page, click on Insert-> Image-> Choose File

  • Locate your Gliffy file and click Open

  • Click OK.

  • Center and size your image

  • Click Save (top right of your page)

  • Click on the More button (top right) and select Edit Site Layout

  • Click My Links on your Sidebar on the left side of your website.

  • Select Add Page

  • Locate your How To Gliffy page and select it.

  • Click OK, OK, Close
