Cyber Safety

Introduction

The decisions made in your digital world affect you as much as those made in the real world. In fact, your digital decisions and behaviors can affect you more and for longer than decisions made in the real world--even with prospective employers and college applications!

Learning Objectives

When you have completed this Thing you will:

1.    Know how to be safe while on the Internet, be a good digital citizen and protect your reputation and identity online.

2.   Understand online etiquette, email etiquette and online bullying.

3.   Meet an international standard for Empowered Learner and Digital Citizen.

4.   Incorporate the 9 themes of Digital Citizenship, the Core Rules of Netiquette, the Digital Bill of Rights, and a tool of your choice to present your Digital Bill of Rights and internet safety

Step 1: Internet Safety Tips and Protecting Your Reputation Online

Before we begin, watch the short videos below:

Safe Web Surfing: Top Tips for Kids and Teens Online

and

 Protecting Reputations Online

TOP 10 ONLINE SAFETY TIPS!

1.  People can save everything that is said online.

2.  Only say online, what you’d be willing to say in person.

3.  Be careful what pictures and videos you post/upload online.

4.  Kids should tell a trusted adult if they feel they are in an uncomfortable situation. Your parents, guardian,  grandparents, teachers, etc. should always know where you are going online (URL) and what you are doing.

5.  Don't be stalk worthy and make sure you keep all of your passwords private.

6.  Don’t open anything from people you do not know.

7.  Never give out your personal information online. Where you live, your phone number, the school you attend, etc. should always be kept private.

8.  Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, Facebook, etc. are NOT secure, even when set to private.

9.  Not everyone online is who they say they are. NEVER agree to meet or talk to anyone who you don't know.

10.  Use common sense!

Step 2: Six Clicks

In this part of the lesson you will view some videos to help you think through how much information can be found out online and privacy. How much information could be found out about you in 6 clicks? Watch these videos closely; have you left any personal identifiers on the net? In the Digital Footprint section we began to explore your presence, this looks at what might also be posted through connections to others that are online.

Key Vocabulary:

Personal identifiers: personal information about yourself that others can use without your consent or knowledge to steal your identity

Dossier: a collection of documents about a particular person, event, or subject

Steps:

1. Watch this resource on SchoolTube "Internet Safety: Do You Really Have a Private Life Online ." It will open in this window, however you can right-click on the hyperlink and select to open it in a new window.

2. Click on this link to view a (flash-based video) "6 Degrees of Information". It will open in a new window which you will need to close to return here.

3. Do you know the risks of posting inappropriate pictures, videos, or messages about yourself online? Next watch this video (flash-based) "Two Kinds of Stupid".

4. Watch this video about digital dossier (YouTube video).

Step 3: Google Docs: Safety Tips

Step 4: Recording Internet Safety Tips

You will now be introduced to Interland

While playing this game, you will be using your Google Drive document to record AT LEAST 10 internet safety tips that you learned about while playing this game.

Once you have found all 10 of your safety tips and have typed them onto your

Google Document, you should then continue to explore the Interland

When you are done, you will have a total of 10 safety tips recorded on your Google Drive Document.

Step 5: Creating a Web Based Presentation

Google Slides is a  FREE online tool that helps you to create

and deliver presentations. Because these presentation tools are web based, you can take your presentations wherever you go, access them from any computer and review, edit, share and deliver presentations on the go.

Using the information that you've learned in Steps 1 & 2, you are going to create a 12 slide Presentation using Google Slides.
