How Our Imagery Is Used
Wickes are a predominately trade based retailer but also want to attract the DIYers and lower end of the interior market, therefore we are trying to deliver on-trend imagery that showcases the product in the best light.
The key focus at the minute is to maximise the photo-real element as much as possible. Shaders, lighting and materiality should be at the centre of the Art Direction.
We have opportunity to play with lighting slightly to create differences from the sets and this will always be decided up front by the whole creative team so everyone has a clear direction.
Wickes are very set on showcasing all products in one shot. Due to this we deliver landscape or square crops dependent on the size and scale of the room. Orientation of rooms tend to come from Wickes, with Styling & Art Direction working closely together to determine how best to light the spaces.
There are options to show different parts of the room in order to minimise the vastness of a room. We can also dictate the best crop for cameos to showcase the product in the best way. See examples below.
In general we have used our standard lighting workflow for Wickes with light, bright spaces to showcase the product in the best way. There are some opportunities to push lighting further with the use of artificial lighting to achieve an overall trend led look.
There have been some requests to replicate CGI imagery from Wickes' old studio into our workflow with updated products or to just generally make them look better. We should always take into consideration what looks best for a CCW point of view and put these forward as suggestions rather than just copying like for like. The example below shows how the original camera looked vs what we proposed.

We have also created a mixture of standard animations and cinemagraphs for the previous project VM1110. Things like day to night and running water have proven to be successful and have been used across social channels.
Generally leading with animation first followed by still images in a carousel format.
