This is a guide to Kitchen and Bathroom modelling and terminology.
BLIND-END CABINET: A blind base cabinet is a piece used in a corner to transition from one wall to another without leaving a large empty/void space in a corner.
BREAKFRONT: A design feature which allows for cabinets to protrude forward from the main run of cabinets.
BUILT-IN: Any appliance installed into a cabinet. Not under the work surface. Affords the convenience of “eye level” cooking, refrigeration and more recently dishwashing.
BUILT-UNDER: Any appliance installed under the work surface. Allows for an uninterrupted work surface and plinth line.
CAM AND DOWEL: This is a cabinet construction method that creates a strong and durable build. Quick lock cam and dowel technology reduces the need for tools, and cuts down assembly time. All you need is a screwdriver.
CANOPY: Fitted as a visible feature. Available in many colours but predominantly stainless steel and glass. Can look fantastic and become a real focal point.
CARCASS: A kitchen cabinet or carcass is the shell of a kitchen. These are the units with shelves that you use to store all your kitchen items. These consist of base cabinets and wall cabinets.
CAROUSEL STORAGE: Storage that fits in your corner cabinets, carousel storage allows you to store and remove items from hard to reach corners.
CERAMIC: Material that is used for most sinks.
CHIMNEY EXTRACTOR: Placed into and “hidden” in an artificial chimney, usually suits a more classic setting. Attends to the extraction and lighting issues whilst not impacting on the “look”.
COMPOSITE QUARTZ: Made with real quartz that’s added during manufacture, providing a thick, solid profile surface that is incredibly robust. Highly scratch resistant and able to withstand very high temperatures. This is ideal if you’re after a robust, hardwearing sink that’s long lasting.
CONCEALED HINGE: Hinges that are hidden from view when the cabinet is closed. Most hinges are concealed as this is the standard hinge type.
CORBEL: A decorative shelf support, typically matched to the finish of the door.
CORIAN: Corian is a synthetic, solid surface which is developed by Dupont. Corian is popular in kitchens as it can be joined without a visible seam. It also offers stain and heat resistance.
CORNICE: A decorative horizontal trim that sits above the top of a cabinet. These are typically used to give a different style to your cabinets.
CUT OUTS: A section of worktop that is ‘cut out’ to allow the installation of a sink, hob, or tap, or to fit around pipes and other obstructions.
DECK MIXER: Deck mixer and bridge taps have a single spout fed by two separate flow control handles, and are fitted to sinks with two holes.
DEKTON: Dekton is a work surface and employs exclusive Sinterized Particle Technology, a high tech process which represents an accelerated version of the metamorphic change that natural stone undergoes when subjected to high temperatures and pressure over thousands of years. It is extremely resilient and so wouldn’t be damaged by scratching, staining, and heating. As well as being non-porous.
DRAWER-LINE UNIT: A drawer line unit is the same height as a standard unit, the difference being that it has a single drawer at the top with a smaller standard door below.
DRAWER UNIT: A drawer unit is the same height as a standard unit, the difference being that rather than consisting of a door, there will be a combination of drawers for storage.
END PANEL : A decorative piece used at the end of an exposed cabinet, usually used to ensure the colour or style of the end unit matches the rest of the kitchen.
FOOD WASTE DISPOSAL: A food waste disposal unit is a device, usually electrically powered, installed under a kitchen sink between the sink’s drain and the plumbing waste pipes. The disposal unit shreds food waste into pieces small enough, generally less than 2 mm, to pass through plumbing
FREE-STANDING: Any appliance or fitment not attached to anything else.
GRANITE: Granite has vast advantages, a major positive is that every slab is unique and cannot be duplicated. It also requires very little maintenance, and by its nature, granite is extremely dense and excellent for repelling stains.
HANDING: The term ‘handing’ relates to which side of the door is connected.
HI-LINE: A standard base kitchen units, with a door and no drawers, is classed as a high-line unit.
HOODS/EXTRACTOR FANS: Intended to extract cooking smells and vapours from the kitchen and to introduce lighting above the hob. Usually ducted outside the house but if this is not possible, a filter is installed and the air re-circulated.
INTEGRATED: Any appliance designed to have a “furniture” door fitted to it, to be hidden from view. Intended to make your appliances look like cupboards and your kitchen look great.
LAMINATE: This is a hard wearing, decorative exterior used on worktops to provide a surface that is hygienic and easy to clean. The surface is bonded to a chip board sub frame, typically 28-38mm thick, to give the look of wood or stone for a very reasonable price.
LINEN STAINLESS STEEL: Offering all the benefits of stainless steel, with the additional benefit of being more scratch resistant due to its textured honeycomb or microdot surface. Linen stainless steel is great if you’re after a more scratch resistant alternative to standard stainless steel.
MANTLE: Usually installed in larger, more traditional kitchens, a mantle is a large over cooker accessory feature that creates the look of an open chimney breast
MDF: Stands for Medium-Density Fibreboard.
MFC: Stands for Melamine Faced Chipboard.
MID-RAIL: The mid-rail is the horizontal bar that splits up the door design into two. Used on Shaker and Frame Doors when door is particularly tall.
PELMET: A decorative horizontal trim that sits below a cabinet. These are typically used to give a different decorative style to cabinets.
PILASTER: A column style design feature particularly popular in more traditional kitchens.
PILLAR TAP: Usually sold as pairs, pillar taps are fitted to sinks with two holes and provide one tap for hot water and another for cold.
PLINTH/KICK PLATE: Used to bridge the gap between the floor and the bottom of kitchen cabinets. These are used to hide away cabinet legs and gaps.
RESIN: Constructed from a lightweight, thinner man-made material with the appearance of composite quartz. Highly resistant to everyday wear and tear. Resin is perfect for customers who want the granite (composite quartz) look without the price tag.
SEMI-INTEGRATED: Any appliance designed to be partly hidden from view (applies to some dishwashers). Gives an alternative “look” which may be preferred by some, perhaps where free-standing appliances are present in the design.
SENSA: Sensa is a granite surface by Cosentino, a high-quality surface that offers such reliable performance that it comes with a 15-year certified warranty. Using natural granite which is sourced from South America, India, and Africa; Cosentino applies a protective treatment which makes Sensa much more resistant to staining than granite in its raw form.
SERVICE VOID: An area behind a cabinet which is not seen once the worktop has been fitted. A service void is used to conceal any waste pipes and wiring that may sit behind the cabinet.
SIDE LEVER: Side lever taps have a single spout fed by an easy-to-use lever. Superbly practical, one lever controls the flow rate and mixes hot and cold water together.
SILESTONE: Silestone is Natural Quartz created for kitchens and bathrooms decoration from a treatment that offers a very high stain resistance and scratch resistance.
SPLASHBACK/BACKSPLASH: These are most typically used behind a hob to protect the wall from steam and food splashes. They are also supplied as decorative panels that fit on the wall above a worktop and can run the entire length of the worktop, either in a matching finish or complementary colour/design.
SPRING NECK/PULL OUT TAP: Pull-out spray taps are mainly used to wash vegetables ect, it has a detachable hose from the main section of the tap.
STAINLESS STEEL: Practical, durable and easy to maintain. They’re lightweight, highly resistant to chipping and cracking providing affordable style. Stainless steel is affordable and has a practical style.
T&G :Stands for tongue and groove.
TANDEM LARDER: Gives you great visibility and easy access to items in your tall cupboards, giving you shelves on the back of the door and shelves inside the cupboard to maximise storage solutions.
TOP LEVER TAP: Like side lever taps with a single spout fed by an easy-to-use top lever that controls the flow rate and mixes hot and cold water together.
TOUGHENED GLASS SINK: Sinks with a stunning glass frame, with a thicker profile than stainless steel combined with an inset stainless steel bowl.
TWIN LEVER TAP: The most popular tap design, twin lever taps have a single spout fed by two separate flow control handles, and are fitted to sinks with one tap hole. This handle offers a mix of lever and cross handle styles.
UPSTAND: A decorative piece matching the worktop that runs the length of the worktop and is typically 70-100mm tall.
VINYL: Vinyl is the name of the material that our doors are wrapped / covered with, this is also know as veneer or laminate. A single piece of vinyl is pressed onto the face and all four edges of the doors, drawer fronts and panels using large machinery.
WASTE KIT: The plumbing components required to plumb in your sink, this comes with a basket strainer as well as plumbing pipes.
