Nanny Flora McFadyen

1879-1941


Known as Flora, was the first born child of Myrtleford farmer John McFadyen and his wife, Margaret Boyns Clemens.

 From the ODH House Committee report 17 July 1899 – The matron reported that Nurses McFayden and Boucher were physically fitted to undergo three years’ training as probationer nurses having been examined by Dr. Skinner.

 From the ODH House Committee report 25 February 1901 – The reported stated that on 19th, 20th & 21st February the annual examinations of nurses was held. … Among the junior nurses, Nurse Moore passed with credit and Nurses Cameron, Boucher and McFadyen passed.

 Date of qualification 14 January 1902.

 From the ODH House Committee report 21 March 1904 – and the appointment of Nurse McFadyen, a former pupil of this hospital to the vacancy was confirmed.

 From the April 1904 UNA Journal – Miss A.M. Boyle, the senior staff nurse, has severed her connection with the hospital, much to the regret of the whole staff, after 5¾ years’ service. Miss N.F MacFadgen, a former trainee of the hospital has been appointed to the vacancy caused by Nurse Boyle’s resignation. written by Matron Winning.

Nurse N. F. McFadyen has resigned her position as staff nurse, to enter upon a course of training at the Women’s Hospital. Nurse Anna Christiansen, who has just completed her training, has been appointed to the vacancy. …

 1906 ER is still listed as a nurse at the ODH.

 1908, 1909, 1912 & 1913 ER Flora is a nurse at a trained nurses’ home located at 1109 Hoddle Street, East Melbourne.

 Flora married John Thomas Mahy in 1912. After their marriage, the couple lived at Middle Park and Prahran before settling at 128 Webster Street, Ballarat. They had two children, Margaret Annie and Dorothy, known as Dory. Tragedy befell the family when in August 1934, Dory, a trainee nurse at the Alfred Hospital, died after falling from a horse.

 In 1941, Flora died suddenly aged 62 and was buried with her daughter, Dory the Roman Catholic section, Brighton Cemetery.
