(FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT.)
I am sorry to have to chronicle the destruction of Mr Edwin Waldie’s house, furniture and effects by a fire which broke out in the house about 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon. The family were out at the time, and how the fire originated is not known. Great sympathy is expressed with the unfortunate family, as everything belonging to them was consumed, except the clothes they were wearing. When the fire was discovered there was a fierce north-west wind blowing, which helped to fan the flames considerably, and although there were several willing hands to render assistance, they were powerless to save anything under the circumstances. The house was a good substantial five roomed wooden cottage, not very long built, and the furniture and effects were also of a superior description. Although the house and furniture are insured for £1OO in the Northern Company this will only cover about half the loss. It is anticipated that steps will be taken by the friends of Mr and Mrs Waldie and family to raise some money to tide them over their present distress. Ballarat Star, 9 November 1897.

A Popular Nurse — Nurse Waldie, who has completed her three years' training at the Ovens District Hospital, left Beechworth on Friday morning. She intends spending a few weeks' holiday at Seymour, prior to returning to her home in Ballarat in which city she; intends taking up an important-appointment. During her sojourn in Beechworth Nurse Waldie has made herself very popular, more especially among- the inmates of the institution. On Tuesday Mr. J. Stewart, one of the inmates of the accident ward, of which Nurse Waldie was in charge, took the opportunity of presenting the departing nurse with a token of the' high' esteem in which she was held by her patients. Mr. Stewart spoke eulogistically and with some feeling of the careful and kindly treatment accorded the patients by Nurse Waldie, who "all regretted "her departure very much, but wished her every success in her new sphere of labor. He handed to her, on behalf of the patients, a handsome silver-backed hair brush and comb, a jewel case, and a Morocco leather handkerchief and glove case.
The kitchen staff also presented Nurse Waldie with a silver-backed hand mirror, whilst the matron and nursing staff gave her a hypodermic syringe. Nurse Waldie, who was completely taken by surprise, in a neat speech thanked them all for the presentations and for the kindly feeling expressed towards her. As a nurse she had simply done her duty, and she was pleased to know that her efforts had been appreciated. She would value their presentations very much, but more so their good opinions.
