Gertrude Logan

1893 - 1971


Gertrude, known as Gert,  was the second of four children born to Alfred Edward Logan, an engineer & Ethel Goodenough. Born 1893 at Bairnsdale.

 Appointed a probationary nurse Bairnsdale Hospital November 1913. Unable to ascertain why she then restarted her training at the ODH in July 1915.

 From the minutes of the ODH board meeting October 19, 1915 - It was decided to place the seal of the hospital on the indentures of Nurse Logan.

 From the ODH Inpatient Register 1 January 1906-28 April, 1925. Admitted as a patient with Erythema nodosum,[1] on 29 October 1915. 10 November 1915 discharged to her father, A.E. Logan, East Bairnsdale.

 Miss Gertrude Logan has received quite a number of congratulations upon her success in passing her final examination qualifying her as a nurse. The examinations were held under the auspices of the Royal Victorian trained Nurses Association and Miss Logan, who is a daughter of Mrs Logan, of Pearson Street, received her training at the Ovens District Hospital, Beechworth. Every Week, 18 July 1918.

The following are the names of the successful candidates at the final examination of the Conjoint Board of the Royal Victorian Trained Nurses’ Association held on 21st and 22nd May: — …  Beechworth (Ovens District) Hospital — Mary Jane Ivy Higgs, Gertrude Logan.

 February 1922, address is Pearson Street. Bairnsdale, Gippsland.

 1923 married Albert Leslie McFarlane, a farmer from a property called ‘Tambo Park’ near Johnsonville in Gippsland.

LOGAN – On the 18th January at her residence, 17 Perth Street, Murrumbeena, Ethel, dearly beloved wife of the late Alfred Logan, and loved mother of Edgar (deceased), Gertrude (Mrs. A.L. McFarlane, Maude and Ruby, aged 69 years lates of Bairnsdale. The Argus, 20 Jan 1940.


[1] Erythema nodosum is a skin condition with painful red lumps, usually on your lower legs. Sometimes it is caused by a streptococcal throat infection, a medicine or a health condition, but often no cause is found.

Gertrude (Gert) McFarlane nee Logan (1893-1971) was born on May 5 1893 at Bairnsdale Victoria Australia. Gert was the second born of 4 children (1 son who died as an infant, and 3 daughters). Prior to her marriage on 7 July 1923 to Albert Leslie McFarlane, Gert trained as a nurse at hospitals in Bairnsdale and Beechworth, Victoria and nursed convalescing troops returning from WW1, as well as patients afflicted by the 2018-1920 Spanish Influenza Pandemic. Nurse Gertrude Logan also attended to her future father-in-law John McFarlane on his death bed, dying of complications of the Influenza on March 26, 1920. Gert raised 3 children (1 son and 2 daughters) on their Tambo Park farm. She was a dedicated member of the CWA (Country Women's Association) and loved visiting her sisters in Melbourne. She died age 78 years with Alzheimer's on Jun 10 1971 whilst in care at Noble Park, Victoria and is buried with her husband Les at Bairnsdale Lawn Cemetery Section A, Victoria, Australia.  Whilst the electoral rolls indicate that Gertrude and Albert lived at Tambo Park from the time of their marriage to 1968, Gertrude died at Noble Park in 1971. She was aged 77.

 Albert died 2 July 1973 at Bairnsdale.
