Humphrey, Maude

1877 - 1930

Born to Rachel Atcheson and George Humphrey at Stawell, originally known as Pleasant Creek. Maud a twin, was born in 1877 and her twin sister May was also a nurse. See Humphrey Maud & May\Research Notes May Humphrey March 2023.pdf or May Humphrey

From the ODH House Committee report 1 June 1903 – Miss Maude Humphrey had been engaged for the vacant position among the probationer nurses.

From the ODH House Committee report 5 October 1903 – The agreement with Nurse Maude Humphrey was ready for affixing the seal to and it was recommended that this be done.

From January 1906 Una Journal - OVENS DISTRICT HOSPITAL. Nurses Alice Griffiths, Edith Horsfall, and Maude Humphrey, passed the recent final examinations. As these three were the only candidates from here, the results were very gratifying to us all.

From the ODH House Committee report 14 May 1906 – It was decided … also to ask Nurse Maude Humphrey to stay on as staff nurse at the close of her 3 years training.

From the minutes of the board of management 15 May 1906 – The seal of the hospital was affixed to the certificate of Nurse Maude Humphrey … and was presented to Nurse Humphrey by the President with in [sic] a few appropriate words.

 Date of qualification – 2 June 1906.

 August 1906, UNA Journal – OVENS DISTRICT HOSPITAL.

Nurse Maude Humphrey completed her three years’ course of training on the 2nd of June. She was the recipient of a post-card album from the nurses and myself. She has been appointed staff nurse.

From the ODH House Committee report 15 November 1907 – The matron was away on holidays, the senior staff nurse, Nurse Humphrey being in charge.

 

From the ODH House Committee report 21 January 1908 – … the senior staff nurse, Nurse Humphrey had resigned as she was joining the staff of the Women’s Hospital for further training …

 

… it was decided to ask one of our late staff nurses to return for a few weeks, and Nurse Maud Humphrey had consented. Ovens and Murray Advertiser, 28 April 1910.

 

September 1910, Maude is appointed as a sister on the Medical Ward at Queen Victoria Hospital, Melbourne. See The Age, 19 September 1910.



1912 Maude obtained her midwifery qualification (QVH).

 

Appears to have lived and worked at the QVH, 483 Lt. Lonsdale Street, Melbourne,  from September 1910 to July 1920.

 

The QVH, established in 1896 was the first women’s hospital in Victoria. Was one of three hospitals in the world founded, managed and staffed by women.

 

Lived at  20 Riversdale Road, Camberwell from 1922 until her death in 1930.


HUMPHREYS - On the 7th May at Camberwell, Sister Maude Humphreys, dearly beloved sister of May, Ray (Mrs. Ashby Dray) Lily (Mrs. R. Gullan) Ethel and Winifred. No flowers by request. Interred at Stawell. The Age, 8 May 1930.
