Ethel Catherine Morrison

1904 - 1946


Ethel’s parents were James Edward Morrison and Anastasia Healey. Born 1904 at Glen Wills. The eldest of three daughters.

 From the ODH House Committee report 15 February 1924 – Nurse Morrison of Bright has commenced duty as probationer nurse.

 From the ODH House Committee report 16 May 1924 – Nurse Morrison of Bright has completed her 3 months’ probation but the medical officer has not yet approved of her.

 From the ODH House Committee report 20 June 1924 – Nurse Ethel Catherine Morrison has completed her probation and has been approved of by the medical officer and matron, as she is under age it will be necessary to get her mother to join her in completing her indentures.

 From the ODH House Committee report 16 May 1924 – The indentures of nurse Ethel Catherine Morrison had been completed, her mother is joined with her and her signature has been witnessed by Mr W.H. [William Henry] Goldsworthy of Bright. The Nurses Board did not grant approval of her educational certificate and they asked her to write an essay and submit it, this has been done and the matron informs me that the Board are now satisfied.

 From the minutes of Board Meeting held 20 June 1924 - The seal of the institution was ordered to be affixed to the indentures of Nurse Ethel Catherine Morrison.

 From the ODH Inpatient Register 1 January 1906-28 April, 1925. Admitted as a patient with fibrositis on 16 October 1924. Discharged 24 October 1924.

 From the ODH House Committee report 17 October 1924 – Nurse Morrison is at present off duty through illness.

From the ODH House Committee report 21 November 1924 – Nurse Morrison is still away on sick leave.

From the ODH House Committed report 17 April, 1925 – Nurse Greenwood and Nurse Morrison are away on their annual leave.

From the ODH House Committee report 22 May 1925 – Nurse Morrison and Nurse Greenwood have returned from their annual leave.

From the ODH House Committee report 19 October 1926 –Nurses Morrison and M. Greenwood go to Melbourne early next month to sit for their exams.

From the ODH House Committee report 21 December 1926 –Nurse Muriel Greenwood and Nurse Morrison had attended the recent examinations in Melbourne. Nurse Greenwood passed and Nurse Morrison failed.

From the ODH House Committee report 15 March 1927 –Nurse Morrison will complete her 3 years training on the 8th of April, she is willing to remain on the staff for a few weeks until the RVTNA exams in May next. … that Nurse Morrison’s services be retained for the present …

From the ODH House Committee report 18 April 1927 – The Secretary reported that Nurse Morrison had completed her 3 years training on the 8th inst. and that she was remaining on the staff for the present month until the RVTNA exams which would be held during the first week in May.

Date of qualification April 1927.

Married Lyndon Ronald Burt in 1930. Appear to have had one child, a daughter who died on the day of her birth, 5 April 1932. Before her marriage Ethel was nursing at Nurse Leeman’s private hospital at 29 Howard Street, East Brunswick.

 1943 ER Ethel & Lyndon are living at 1A Shierlaw Avenue, Canterbury. Ethel is listed as home duties, Lyndon as a motorman.

 Removed from general nurses register June 1946.

 Burt – On Dec. 5 at Orbost District Hospital, Ethel Catherine, dearly beloved wife of Lyndon Ronald Burt of Canterbury loving mother of Judith (dec.), devoted eldest daughter of Anastasia Morrison of Bright and the late James Edward Morrison formerly of Glen Wills, loving sister of Lilian and Daphne and much loved sister in law of Elaine, Marie and Alwyn (RAN, presumed lost in action), dearly loved aunt of Brian, John, Pat, Edward, Norman and William. A patient sufferer at rest. (Privately interred Burwood Cemetery on December 9.) The Sun News Pictorial, 10 December 1946.
