Edith Clarice (Clariss) McLeish

1896 - 1980


Born 17 January 1896 at Yea to Duncan and Matilda Ann McLeish born Walker. Eldest of six children.

 

Miss Edith McLeish daughter of Mr Duncan McLeish met with a painful accident on New Years Day. She was returning home in a vehicle with a party of holiday makers, and when nearing their destination her foot was caught in the wheel. But for the prompt action of the driver her leg would have been fractured She escaped however with a severe sprain which was attended to by Dr Shields. Yea Chronicle, 8 January 1913.

From the minutes of ODH board meeting 16 April 1918 - The seal of the hospital be affixed to the indentures of Nurses … and McLeish.

 

From the ODH Inpatient Register 1 January 1906-28 April, 1925. Admitted as a patient with influenza, on 21 September 1918 1 October 1918 discharged to her father, Duncan McLeish, a butcher at Yea.

 

From the ODH Inpatient Register 1 January 1906-28 April, 1925. Admitted as a patient with pharyngitis on 29 May 1919. 3 June 1919 discharged to her mother, Mrs. D. McLeish, Yea.

 

From the ODH Inpatient Register 1 January 1906-28 April, 1925. Admitted as a patient with septic throat on 25 August 1920. 26 August 1920 discharged to her mother, Mrs. D. McLeish, High Street, Yea.

 

From the ODH House Committee report 15 November 1920 – … Nurse Mowatt and Nurse McLeish were in Melbourne for their 3rd year exams

 

From the ODH House Committee report 17 January 1921 – Nurse Mowatt and nurse McLeish had completed their training and were retained at 30/- per week as the new nurses were not experienced enough to care for the serious cases in the institution at present.

TRAINED NURSES’ EXAMINATION.

The following nurses were successful at the recent examinations, held by the Royal Victorian Trained Nurses’ Association: - Beechworth (Ovens District) Hospital—-Edith C. McLeish, Eleanor Mowatt.

 

Date of qualification 21 January 1921.

 

From the ODH House Committee report 14 February 1921 – … Nurse McLeish was still retained.

 

From the ODH House Committee report 14th March 1921 – … Nurse McLeish had left the institution.

 

From the April 1921 Una Journal - Registrations. … McLeish, Edith Clarice, Ovens District Hospital, Beechworth; cert., Ovens District Hospital, Jan., 1921; exam., Nov., 1920.

 

February 1922, address is “Linden,” Williams Road, Prahran—Reg. March, 1921., Cert January 1921. ‘Linden’ was a trained nurses’ home and registered by the Victorian Trained Nurses’ Association. Is still at ‘Linden’ in 1924

 

Una Journal, 1 December 1923 – Miss Margaret A Cubitt and Miss McLeish have gone to Tasmania to do private nursing during the summer. They will reside at the Trained Nurses’ Club Hobart where they will probably obtain plenty of work as there is a shortage of nurses there.

 

1931 & 1935 is in High Street, Yea.

 

1936 ER at 5 Kensington Road, South Yarra – also a trained nurses’ home.

 

1940 – possibly at the Yea Bush Nursing Hospital.

 

1949 - 1977 ER is at 28 Munro Street, Middle Brighton.

 

Left Sydney bound for London on the Arcadia arriving on 3 July 1955. Address in UK Cadogan Hotel, Sloane Street, London. Intended duration 5 months.

 

13 January 1956 arrived at Fremantle on the Dominion Monarch from Southampton 16 December 1955 on her way home to Melbourne. Address is given as 28 Munro Street, Middle Brighton. 

 

Died 3rd August 1980 at Southern Memorial Hospital, Brighton. Buried at Yea.
