1900 - 1969


Born 3 September 1900 Yackandandah to Isaac Alexander and Christina Robinson. Fourth born of eight children.

Father was a miner at Yackandandah.

 From the ODH House Committee report 21 November 1922 – Nurse Morrison, Ferguson, Alexander & Finnis have passed their exam in Anatomy & Physiology they were examined by Dr. Lawrence.

 From the ODH Inpatient Register 1 January 1906-28 April, 1925. Admitted as a patient with tonsillitis on 6 April 1923. 10 April 1923 discharged to her father I. Alexander of Yackandandah.

Following is the list of successful candidates in connection with the bi-annual examinations of the Royal Victorian Trained Nurses’ Association:— … Beechworth Hospital — Irene Winifred Alexander, Doris Ivy Morrison.

 From the ODH House Committee report 18 September 1923 – Nurse Alexander had completed her 3 years training on the 17th inst. and she has agreed to remain for a week or two on £2-2-0 per week if you are agreeable, her services are required as 3 nurses are off duty.

 1924 ER is at Kynaston Private Hospital, 70 Bambra Road, East Caulfield. On the corner of Hudson Street. Patients were received after Operations, Nervous Breakdowns, and others requiring Rest Cure and Diet. Kynaston is surrounded by 5½, acres of orchard and grounds, and is within a few minutes walk of the new Caulfield electric tram.

A full-sized billiard table for use of Patients. Kynaston was opened as a private hospital in 1914 by two familial sisters, Nurse Grace Anderson and Sadie (Sara Theresa) Dunphy. Later known as Kahlyn.

 30 January 1926 married Oliver James Thorley at North Melbourne. Oliver the son of Phillip Thomas Thorley & Maria Louise Seddon.

 Lived in Jardine Street, Beechworth for many years. Oliver a mental nurse at Mayday for many years. Until at least 1954.

Thorley’s originally from Stanley.

Oliver died aged 76 in 14 July 1969.

 Irene died 20 Dec 1982. Buried Stanley.
