Alice Ignatius Marum

1885 - 1983

Born 29 April 1885 at Kergunyah,[1] Alice was the second of 11 children born to Julia Ellenia Kinchington and Pierce Luke Marum.

 

With the exception of Ada (known as Madge) who was a primary school teacher, all of Alice’s sisters were nurses. They were:

Eva Florence (known as Tot and/or Tottie) seems to have worked as a nurse but cannot find any details re qualification.

Eleanor, (known as Nellie) St Vincent’s Melbourne qualified 1913.

Julia Elizabeth (known as Bessie) qualified Daylesford Hospital, 1913.

Isabel Catherine (known as Belle) qualified June 1915, Mt. St. Evin’s Private Hospital, Eastern Hill.

Mary Frances (known as Frances) qualified Melbourne Hospital, January 1920.

Ita Diana May (known as May) qualified May 1933 – training hospital, St. Vincent’s Darlinghurst.

 

From the ODH Inpatient Register 1 January 1906-28 April, 1925. Admitted to the ODH with typhoid fever. Discharged 17 May 1908 to her father, Pierce Marum at Kergunyah.

 

From the ODH House Committee report 26 October 1908 –The secretary reported that Nurse Marum had completed her 3 months on trial and was satisfactory. Her indentures are ready for signature …

 

From the ODH House Committee report 8 November 1909 – The Superintendent reported that the Junior Nurses Examinations was held on the 5th inst., … Nurses Patton, Waldie & Marum passed.

 

... Nurses' Examination — The results of the examination held on 6th and 7th June ... have been announced, and we are pleased to notice that Nurse Marum, of the Ovens District Hospital, Beechworth, has passed. ... ... - Ovens and Murray Advertiser, 8 July 1911.

 

From the minutes of ODH board meeting October 11 1911 - The seal of the hospital was affixed to the certificates of Nurse Marum and to the indentures of Nurses Chappell and Connors.

From the ODH House Committee report 13 November 1911 – The Secretary reported that Nurse Marum had resigned her position as staff nurse and left on December 8th.

Married Beechworth born Thomas Richard Dodd at Beechworth 7 June 1913.

 

... Mr. Thos. Dodd, traveller for Messrs. Andrews and Son, Beechworth, was quietly married on Saturday last [7 June] to Nurse Marum, formerly of the Ovens District Hospital. Mr. Percy Andrews was best man, and the bride's sister officiated as bridesmaid. Ovens and Murray Advertiser, 11 June 1913.

 

The couple lived in Beechworth for a couple of years before locating to Sydney. Their eldest son Thomas Francis Dodd, was born in Sydney in 1917.

 

KERGUNYAH. Mr. and Mrs. Pierce Marum left the Valley recently after a residence therein of 60 years. Before leaving Mr. Thos. Nisbet, on behalf of residents, presented them with a well filled wallet of notes. Mr. and Mrs. Marum intend to make their home in Sydney. Wodonga & Towong Sentinel, 25 May 1928.

 

OBITUARY MR. PIERCE L. MARUM Older residents of this district and the Kiewa Valley portion of it in particular, will regret to hear of the death of Mr. Pierce. L Marum which occurred in Sydney on 15th inst; For a great many years the late Mr. Marum lived at Kergunyah where he had the esteem and goodwill of everyone in the district. In his younger days he dealt in fat cattle, and, at various times, was associated with the late Mr. J. McDonald, of Albury, in some very large stock transactions, A few years ago the younger members of his family migrated to Sydney and they induced their father to join them. At the time of his death, he was residing at Marrickville. He was 85 years of age. Wodonga & Towong Sentinel, 31 January 1930.

 

OBITUARY

Mr Pierce L. Marum. We sincerely regret to report the death of one of the early and highly respected pioneers of the Kiewa Valley, in the person of Mr Pierce L. Marum (late of Kergunyah), who died at his new residence, 237 Livingstone Road, Marrickville, N.S.W., on the 15th inst., after a long illness. The late Mr Marum, who was 85 years of age, was one of nature's gentlemen whose name was a household word for his many acts of kindness. His genial personality and benevolent nature made for him a host of friends throughout the N.E. district. A capable judge of stock, his services at agricultural shows as a judge was largely availed of. His death is regretted by a large circle of friends. He leaves a wife and grown-up family of sons and daughters: — Frank (late A.I.F.), Melbourne; George (killed in action), Harold [Richard Harold] (West Australia), Alice, Mrs T. Dodd [Thomas Dodd] (Marrickville) Nellie [Eleanor] (nurse, deceased), Tottie (nurse, Sydney) Sisters Bessie [Julia Elizabeth] and Belle [Isabel Catherine] served overseas during the Great War 1914-18), Madge [Ada Annie Rose] (Mrs E. Howell (Beechworth), May [Mary Frances] (Melbourne), Florence [Eva Florence] (nurse, Sydney), to mourn the loss of a fond husband and devoted father.

29 Aug 1944 - Flight Sergeant Thomas Henry Francis DODD (424861) of the Royal Australian Air Force - Took off 2026 from Waddington, Lincolnshire. Lost without trace. Son of Thomas Richard and Alice Ignatius Dodd, of Marrickville, New South Wales, Australia.

 

DODD, Thomas Richard – September 1, 1949 of 7 Anderton Street, Marrickville, dearly loved husband of Alice and father of Tom (deceased), Brendan (Father Peter, C.P.,) (Deceased), Kevin and Moyna (Mrs. Aubusson). Requiescat in pace.  For funeral announcement see Saturday’s Herald. Sydney Morning Herald, 2 September 1949.

It seems Alice lived with, at times, various family members including her sisters at 7 Anderton Street, Marrickville from about 1932 to 1968.

 

Julia Marum, Alice’s mother, died aged 98, at the family home, 237 Livingstone Road, Marrickville on 29 June 1957.

 

Prior to her death in 1983, Alice was living at 14 Wingrove Avenue, Epping with her daughter Moyna and son-in-law Jim.

 

DODD, Alice Ignatius – November 3, 1983 of Epping and Marrickville, dearly loved wife of the late Thomas Dodd and mother of Tom (deceased), Brendan (Father Peter, C.P.,) (Deceased), Kevin (Deceased) and Moyna (Mrs. Aubusson). Fond mother-in-law of Jim Aubusson, loving grandmother of Gabriel and Peter, Brendan and Terese, Martin, Peter and Linda and Brian, great grandmother of Nicholas, Matthew and Benjamin. Aged 98. May she rest in peace.  Sydney Morning Herald, 4 November 1983.
