Father George Henry Barkes, a miner. Mo: Margaret Seymour. Third of 5 children. Born 1901 at Christmastown.
From the ODH House Committee report 21 February 1922 – The Secretary reported that by direction of the President he had advertised in the district papers for probationer nurses and 5 applications had been received, the first 3 received were Miss Channon of Beechworth, Miss Barkes of Xmas Town [Christmastown, about three miles south east of Rutherglen] and Miss Lewis of Myrtleford. Miss Channon has commenced duty and Miss Barkes and Miss Lewis have arranged to start about the end of the month.
From the ODH House Committee report 23 June 1922 –… Nurse Barkes & Lewis have completed their term of probation and they have been passed by the medical officer and approved of by the Matron, and are prepared to sign their indentures.

From the ODH House Committee report 18 September 1923 – The Secretary reported that Nurse Lewis & Nurse Finnis were still off duty on sick leave and that Nurse Barkes had been ordered to Melbourne to consult an eye specialist.
From the ODH House Committee report 15 February 1924 – Nurse Barkes is away on her annual holiday.
From the ODH House Committee report 21 November 1924 – Nurse Barkes is in Melbourne attending the nurse’s examinations and will return tomorrow night.
From the ODH House Committee report 19 December 1924 – Nurse Barkes has passed her final exam and will be due to leave here about the middle of March.
From the ODH House Committee report 20 February 1925 – Nurse Barkes who has passed her final exam will complete her 3 years training on the 13th of next month. She is agreeable to remain on for a few weeks if required. …Recommended that Nurse Barkes be retained if required and that the salary be at the rate of £90-0-0 per annum.
From the ODH House Committee report 21 March 1925 – Sister Barkes completed her 3 years training on the 13th inst., and in accordance with your instructions at last meeting she has been retained as sister for a few weeks at the rate of £90-0-0 per year.

From the ODH House Committee report 17 April 1925 – Nurse Barkes who completed her 3 years training on 13th March is still engaged as sister at the rate of £90-0-0 per year is entitled to her certificate.
From the ODH House Committee report 22 May 1925 – The Secretary reported as follows: Matron Morgan left the institution … Sister Barkes is in charge for the present.
From the ODH House Committee report 19 June 1925 – The secretary reported that the acting matron had commenced duty on 29th of May and that Sister Barkes had left on 31st May. She desires a reference from the Board. … recommended that the matter of Sister Barkes’ reference be referred to the Board.
June 1925 nurse’s registration lists Lucy as being at the Women’s Hospital Carlton.
1926 ER Lucy is at 118 Gipps Street, East Melbourne. Nurse's registration for the same year lists Lucy as being at "Crathie House," 118 Gipps Street, East Melbourne. The matron of Crathie House at the time, Grace Valentine Boucher had also done her general nursing training at the ODH.
1928 & 1935 & 1936 ER Women’s Hospital Carlton.
10 April 1937 married Leo Mervyn Power, (known as Mervyn) at St Patrick’s Cathedral. See Rutherglen Sun & Chiltern Valley Advertiser
9 Feb 1938 a son born at St. Jude’s private hospital, Murtoa.
1942 - 1949 ER Lucy and her husband are shop keepers at 372 Point Nepean Road, (also known as Nepean Highway) Mentone.
Mervyn did not serve in ww2.
1954 Lucy & Mervyn are shop keepers at 257 Bluff Road, Sandringham.
1963 ER Lucy & Mervyn are shop keepers at 89 Balcombe Road, Mentone.
1967 & 1972 ER Lucy & Mervyn are at 29 Lubrano Street, East Brighton. Lucy – HD., Leo – shop keeper.
POWER - On July 21, at his home , 29 Lubrano Street, East Brighton, dearly loved husband of Lucy Mary, loved and devoted father of Adrian and Beryl (Mrs. E. Lee-Hausman) , fond father in law of Catherine and Edmund, loved grandpa of Stephen , Ann, Janet, Christina and David Power, Ruth and Julian Lee-Hausman. Requiescat in pace. No Flowers by request. The Age, 23 July1974.
1977 ER Lucy is living at 5/273 Bluff Road, Sandringham (betw. Bay Road & Abbott St.)
Lucy died at Sandringham, 12 December 1977 and was buried with her husband two days later at Cheltenham.
