Elsie was born 11 July 1895 at Harrietville to Mary Catherine Faulkner and John Gow, a miner. Second eldest of 6 children 

From the Ovens District Hospital (ODH) House Committee report 18 September 1916 – That Miss Gow of Harrietville had commenced duty as a probationer nurse.

 

From the minutes of the ODH board meeting 19 December 1916 - It was decided to affix the seal of the hospital to the indentures of Nurse Gow …

 

The seal of the hospital was affixed to the indentures of Nurses Gow and Hall ... Ovens and Murray Advertiser, 20 December 1916.

 

At a recent examination held at the Ovens District Hospital, Beechworth, Miss Elsie R. Gow, daughter of Mr and Mrs John Gow of Harrietville, was successful in passing an examination in anatomy and physiology. Alpine Observer and North Eastern Herald, 26 October 1917.

 

From the ODH Inpatient Register 1 January 1906-28 April, 1925. Admitted as a patient with influenza on 8 May 1919. 17 May 1919 discharged to her mother, Mrs John Gow of Harrietville.

 

From the ODH House Committee report 15 September 1919 - … nurse Gow will complete her 3 years training on the 20th September …

 

From the ODH House Committee report 21 October 1919 - … Nurse Gow had completed her 3 years training and had left the hospital …

 

… £15-1-5 was due to the nurses who are training here – the payments are in accordance with the circular received from the Board of Public Health dated 29 July 1919 and the amounts owing to the trainees are as follows - Nurse Gow £5-1-5, Nurse Bruce £3-8-9, Nurse I’Anson £3-9-9, Nurse Pini £1-15-0, Nurse Cubitt £1-6-6 …

Elsie married Charles (Carl) Martens 1920.

 

8 September 1920 - birth of Beatrice Muriel Martens in Queensland to Elsie & Carl.

 

Miss Ethel Gow, 14, of Harrietville, died in Wangaratta Hospital of meningitis on Monday. Ovens and Murray Advertiser, 11 September 1920.

 

4 September 1922, birth of Herbert Stanley Martens in Queensland.

 

1921 ER Elsie & Carl are living at Waverley Road, Taringa, Qld. Carl is a miner.

 

May 1933 Elsie’s mother Catherine dies at Bright. Buried Harrietville.

 

1937 Elsie is living on the corner of Jackson Street & Moggill Road, Indooroopilly.

 

1943 Elsie is living with her daughter, Muriel Beatrice Martens on the corner of Jackson Street & Moggill Road, Indooroopilly.

 

13 December 1944, Elsie’s father John dies at Surrey Hills. Buried Harrietville.

 

1949 Elsie is at the corner of Jackson Street & Moggill Road, Indooroopilly, Qld.

 

1954 - 1963 ER Elsie & Carl are living at 418 Moggill Road, Indooroopilly, Qld.

 

Carl died Queensland, 8 September 1965. Mother Allison Mitchell. Father Charles Frederick Emil Martens.

 

1968 – 1980 ER Elsie is living with Herbert Stanley Martens at 418 Moggill Road, Indooroopilly, Queensland.

 

Elsie died Queensland, 24 November 1988.
