Marian Eva McDonald


1883 - 1919


Born in 1883, the eldest child of five children born to Christina Maxwell and Joseph McDonald at Cohuna. Joseph died when Marian was 7 years old.

 From the ODH House Committee report 19 February 1906 – Miss Macdonald had been engaged to fill the probationer nursing vacancy occurring on March 1st when Nurse Horsfall completes her training.

 From the minutes of the ODH board meeting 12 June 1906, … the seal of the hospital was affixed to the agreement with Nurse M E McDonald …

 From the ODH Inpatient Register 1 January 1906-28 April, 1925. Admitted as a patient with perinephritis on 1 June 1909. 30 June 1909 discharged to her mother at Cohuna.

From the ODH House Committee report 18 January 1909 – It was also decided to ask Nurse McDonald to stay on at the conclusion of her training for a few months.

From the minutes of the board meeting 27 April 1909, Nurses McDonald and Milne having completed their training … that the hospital seal be affixed to their certificates.

Authority was given for the seal of the institution and the president's signature to be affixed to the certificates of Nurses McDonald and Milne ... Ovens and Murray Advertiser, 1 May 1909, page 4.

Date of qualification 2 March 1909.

From the minutes of the board meeting 11 May 1909, Nurse McDonald was presented with her certificate by the chairman …

... Gained her certificate, in handing her nurse's certificate to Nurse McDonald, the chairman thanked her for three years' faithful service, and wished her success ... Ovens and Murray Advertiser, 15 May 1909.

MARRIAGES

BUTLER-McDONALD – On the 7th September at Cohuna, John George, eldest son of J.H. Butler, Cheltenham to Marian Eva, eldest daughter of late Joseph and Christina McDonald of “Donaldton”, Cohuna. Leader, 21 October 1911.

 BUTLER - On the 27th February, 1919, at her residence, "Wharrington," Yarrbat avenue, Canterbury, Marian Eva, dearly beloved wife of John George Butler, loving mother of John and Maxwell, loving daughter of Mrs. C. McDonald, of Cohuna. (Private interment in Box Hill Cemetery). The Argus, 28 February 1919.
