Eleanor Mowatt

Known as Ella. Fourth child of Johanna Elenor Deutschmann and Alexander (Alex) Graham Mowatt. Alex began his working life with the Victorian Railways at Ararat in 1882 and rose to stationmaster in 1909. As a result of his employment, the family lived in Taradale, Traralgon, Cranbourne, Tongala, Baddaginnie, Mangalore and Warracknabeal.
Ella was born in 1895 at Traralgon.
From the ODH House Committee report 15 October 1917 – The secretary reported that as the last new pupil nurse was not suitable, she had left and Miss E. Mowatt had been engaged for the vacancy.
Indentured as a probationary nurse February 1918 - see Ovens and Murray Advertiser, 20 February 1918.
From the ODH House Committee report 19 August 1918 …nurse Mowatt whose home is at Warracknabeal asked if she would be allowed an extra week’s holiday as it takes her 2 days to get to her home and 2 days to return. She is willing to work the extra week at the end of her training.
From the ODH Inpatient Register 1 January 1906-28 April, 1925. Admitted as a patient with influenza on 5 July 1919. 16 July 1919 discharged to her father, Alexander G. Mowatt, stationmaster, Serviceton.
From the ODH House Committee report 14 July 1919 – The matron and nurses Mowatt, Bruce and Giblett are ill with influenza.
From the ODH Inpatient Register 1 January 1906-28 April, 1925. Admitted as a patient with enteritis on 5 March 1920. 10 March 1920 discharged to her mother at Ascot Street, Ballarat.
From the ODH Inpatient Register 1 January 1906-28 April, 1925. Admitted as a patient with septic throat on 7 May 1920. 29 May 1920 discharged to her mother at 522 Ascot Street, Ballarat.
From the ODH House Committee report 24 May 1920 – Nurse Mowatt has been ill since the 7th inst. Due to this illness she was unable to go to Melbourne to sit for her exams.
From the ODH House Committee report 15 November 1920 – … Nurse Mowatt and Nurse McLeish were in Melbourne for their 3rd year exams.

The following nurses were successful at the recent examinations, held by the Royal Victorian Trained Nurses’ Association: - Beechworth (Ovens District) Hospital— … Eleanor Mowatt.
From the ODH House Committee report 17 January 1921 – Nurse Mowatt and nurse McLeish had completed their training and were retained at 30/- per week as the new nurses were not experienced enough to care for the serious cases in the institution at present.

Clifford served in WW1 – Enlisted as a 21 year old in 1915. Discharged June 1919. Served in Egypt and France.
1928 Sands Victorian Directory lists Clifford as a farmer at Creighton’s Creek, (Shire of Euroa).
1931 ER Clifford is a station hand at Golf Hill Station, Shelford. Ella is listed as living at the same address. Golf Hill station was one of the earliest pastoral settlements in Victoria and one of the most influential … See
1936 ER the family were living at 13 John Street, West Geelong – Clifford is listed as a labourer.
Ella died in 1940 aged 45.
MOWAT – On July 6 at Geelong, Eleanor dearly beloved wife of Clifford Sinclair Mowat of 13 John Street, Geelong West, and loving mother of Graeme, Lois and Keith. Aged 45 years – Peace, perfect peace. The Argus, 8 July 1940.
Buried Geelong Cemetery, 8 July 1940.
Clifford died 1966.
