Although he had some rides on the Flat, William George Rogers had all of his wins over jump, 21 in all between 1906 and 1914, with a best score of seven in 1913.
His first ride under National Hunt rules was a winning one, at Newbury on October 30, 1906, when his mount, 8/1 chance Reptile, landed the Juvenile Selling Hurdle. The colt was also making his debut over jumps, having been placed several times on the Flat, and came through strongly to score by four lengths. He was sold after the race and William had to wait more than two years for another success.
There was a similar gap between his second and third wins but matters progressed more swiftly from thereon, with six wins in 1911. He did not ride in any major races but had three winners in two days at Torquay’s 1913 Easter meeting. His final victory came at the corresponding Torquay fixture the following year when, after being beaten by Jack Reardon on Polite Plunger in a two-horse race at the start of the afternoon, he bounced back to land the St Mary-Church Hurdle on Ashore in a close finish, beating Tommy Willmot’s mount Martinet by a head.
After not riding for two years, he resumed in 1917 but rode no more winners. He had his final mount at Gatwick on January 16, 1919, when Sippet Charlie was unplaced in the Timberham Hurdle.
