Run on Wednesday, December 3, 1873, at Bromley racecourse over one and a half miles and six hurdles, the Beckenham Hurdle Handicap had attracted thirteen runners, among them Mr Langland’s Cardinal Wolsey, a three-year-old set to carry 10 stone. Jockey Robinson was in the saddle. There was just one line about them in the race description published the following day: ‘Cardinal Wolsey fell on the far side and Robinson received a severe shaking’. In fact, such was the seriousness of his injuries that he was rushed to Bromley Hospital where he died at three-thirty on Thursday morning. Robinson, aged 28, came from Epsom and was unmarried. He left his mother, who was greatly dependent on him.
