Bertram Bernard Reed may only have ridden one winner during his three-season career over jumps, but to do so he had to beat three champion jockeys.
His first ride had been on Aigionnette II, unplaced in the Pulborough Three-Year-Old Hurdle at Fontwell Park on September 13, 1951.
More than a year elapsed before he achieved his sole success. It came at Wye on November 3, 1952, when his mount Bois d’Or, trained by Harry Davison at Findon, in Sussex, won the Three-Years-Old Hurdle by a short head. The winner led most of the way, was headed on landing over the last by Fred Winter on Sage, then rallied to regain the lead close home.
Former champion Jack Dowdeswell on Carole Paula and reigning champion Tim Molony on Lovelace were both unplaced. Winter was crowned champion jockey for the first time at the end of that 1952/53 season.
Bert had partnered Bois d’Or on his only previous start when fourth at Fontwell Park the previous month. Mick Rees took over for Bois d’Or’s next three starts but Bert was reunited with the colt back at Wye on March 30, 1953. Again they were in front over the final flight but this time they were run out of it by Harry Sprague’s mount Champasur and beaten a neck.
Bois d’Or did not run again and Bert had no further wins. He had his final ride at Newbury on January 20, 1954, when Quick Return finished eleventh of twelve runners in the Abingdon Handicap Hurdle.
Bert Reed's only winner: Bois D'Or, Wye, November 3, 1952
