John Regan

National Hunt jockey John Regan was born in 1896 and rode a total of 25 winners during the 1920s and early 1930s.

He had his first ride in public when finishing eighth of 12 runners on Master Gris in the Hartington Handicap Chase at Uttoxeter on 22 October 1923. He gained his first victory on Fort Bridge, a three-length winner of the Try Again Chase at Market Rasen on Easter Monday, 21 April 1924. Fort Bridge was trained by Bob Chadwick, who had won the 1910 Grand National on Jenkinstown as a jockey and twice finished second and third in the race.

John enjoyed his most successful season in 1925/26 with seven wins. They included a winner on both days of Torquay’s 1926 Easter meeting, landing a handicap chase on Varsovie on Easter Monday and a handicap hurdle on Young Pole on the Tuesday.

He had two rides over the Grand National fences, both in the Stanley Chase, falling on Flywheel in 1930 but completing the course in eighth place on Politician in 1931.

Prior to getting round Aintree on Politician, John had ridden what would prove to be his last winner, 13-year-old Agricola, in the Hatton Selling Handicap Chase at Warwick on 3 February 1931.

Agricola, by then 16 years old, was also his final ride when trailing home last of four finishers in the Heathencote Selling Handicap Chase at Towcester on Tuesday, 3 April 1934.
