There were four wins over jumps for Gregory Neal Robertson in the first half of the 1990s.
He rode as a conditional jockey for Bryan McMahon and it was on his eight-year-old 33-1 shot Cheerful Times that he had his first success, taking the lead approaching the last flight and holding the challenge of Graham Bradley on Mudahim by half a length to win the Ladbroke Handicap Hurdle at Uttoxeter on December 20, 1991.
However, win number two did not come until January 5, 1994, when Glossy made virtually all the running in the Stilton Conditional Jockeys’ Claiming Hurdle on the all-weather at Southwell, holding on to beat Celtic Bob by a head. Only 17 days passed before Greg won again when Absolutely Foxed stayed on to land the Boston Selling Handicap Hurdle at Market Rasen by a head.
There was then a gap of over a year before, back at Southwell on March 11, 1995, Galaxy Rai, trained like his other winners by Bryan McMahon, took the lead on the run-in and won the Thurgarton Selling Novices’ Limited Hurdle by two lengths. Greg had partnered the four-year-old on three previous unplaced starts that season, and their only subsequent outing was equally disappointing. He rode for one further season but without success.
Greg Robertson’s winners were, in chronological order:
1. Cheerful Times, Uttoxeter, December 20, 1991
2. Glossy, Southwell, January 5, 1994
3. Absolutely Foxed, Market Rasen, January 22, 1994
