Tommy Robson

1924 - 1998


Thomas William Robson was born at Belford, Northumberland, on July 26, 1924.

He started out in 1942 as an amateur, turning professional in 1961. His first winner was Border River at Cartmel on May 17, 1948.

He became a trainer in 1954 and sent out Magic Court to win the 1964 Champion Hurdle.

Tommy, a qualified vet, was born on a farm on the Duke of Northumberland estate.

He twice rode the winner of the Scottish Grand National; Queen's Taste (1953) and Sham Fight (1962).

He also trained Brasher to win the same race in 1965.

Tommy suffered from diabetes since 1946.

He died in Hexham Hospital on October 6, 1998, aged 74.

He left a wife and three children.
