Leslie Rothwell

Leslie Rothwell was born on August 7, 1950. He served his apprenticeship with John Cousins at Scotforth, Lancaster from December 1965 to December 1968 and had ten rides in public during that time.

They included Denbigh Ward – whom he rated the best he rode – in a two-year-old maiden plate at Doncaster on October 27, 1967. Denbigh Ward went on to win several races for Cousins.

With his apprenticeship ended, Leslie stayed with Cousins and took out a National Hunt jockey’s licence in 1969. He enjoyed his red-letter day on Saturday, January 24, 1970, when riding the Cousins-trained Wigan Park to victory in the Coxhoe Selling Handicap Hurdle at Sedgefield. He’d ridden Wigan Park twice already that season, at Wolverhampton in January and Haydock in February, so it was a case of third time lucky.

It was Leslie’s sole success from 13 rides that season and the only one of his career. He did not renew his licence the following season but had one more go in 1973/74, sadly without further success.
