Anthony Redmond

Anthony (Tony) Redmond was joint Champion Irish National Hunt Jockey in 1963, sharing the title with Pat Taaffe, Francis Shortt and Bobby Coonan. He rode as stable jockey for successful trainer Paddy Norris.

Tony rode out his claim when winning on the Norris-trained chaser Moated Grange at Roscommon on September 6, 1960, following up on him at Listowel later that month. Victory on Chenille War at Limerick on Boxing Day gave him a score of six winners for the year. He gained his first notable success on Jalan-Basar in the St Patrick’s Day Chase at Baldoyle in 1961. In 1962 he won the Crafty Prince Cup Chase at Killarney on Scotch Prince.

However, Tony’s banner year came in 1963, during which he rode 29 winners to give him a four-way share of the Champion Jockey title. He struck a rich vein of form on Norris-trained runners during the summer months, winning four times on Miss California, including the Phoenix Ale Handicap Chase at Waterford & Tramore and the Mangerton Handicap Chase at Limerick Junction, and three in row on the hurdler Sedandun. His most notable successes during that year included three valuable handicap hurdles on Some Slipper: the Grangecon Handicap Hurdle at Naas, the Clonmel Foods Handicap Hurdle at Powerstown Park (now known as Clonmel) and Dundalk’s Carroll Handicap Hurdle. They also finished second in that year’s Galway Hurdle.

In December Tony won the Naas Handicap Hurdle on yet another of Norris’s horses, Persian Signal. A Boxing Day winner at Leopardstown brought him level with Bobby Coonan at the head of the jockey’s table on 29 winners, but Francis Shortt rode one at Limerick the next day to join them at the top, and then Pat Taaffe notched a Leopardstown treble on December 28 to make it a four-way tie.

Tony rode two big winners at the 1964 Punchestown Festival, both for Norris, landing the Martin Mahony Champion Novice Hurdle on Emporio and the Downshire Handicap Hurdle on Persian Signal. He then won the Mickey Macardle Memorial Cup Chase at Dundalk on Some Slipper.

He rode 66-1 shot Ballygowan in the 1965 Grand National, refusing at the 20th fence. But he enjoyed another good Punchestown Festival that year, winning the Prince of Wales Chase on Beau Bear and the Eadestown Novice Chase on Agincourt.

Tony landed two decent handicap chases that summer on Champion Prince, firstly the Sarawaki Chase at Killarney in July and then the Tom Dreaper ‘Inis-Aluinn’ Cup at Waterford & Tramore in August. In October he won Punchestown’s Phoenix Beer Chase on the Paddy Norris-trained Emporio, finishing the year with a score of 21 winners.

He had his second Grand National mount in 1966 aboard 100-1 outsider My Gift, pulling up four out when in arrears.

In contrast to the success he had enjoyed in the first half of the 1960s, Tony’s career steadily declined during the second half of the decade. His final winner of note was Feahoe in the Fairyhouse Handicap Hurdle in April 1968. Among his last winners was Rosinver Bay for trainer Tony Riddell Martin in the Blessington Handicap Chase at Naas on October 12, 1968.

Having quit the saddle at the start of the 1970s, he embarked on what was to prove a long and successful career as a trainer.
