Irish jump jockey John Rochford rode one winner in his homeland on D’Arcy, trained by Captain Dennis Baggallay, at Baldoyle on January 30, 1952, beating Pat Taaffe on Greek Sontoi by eight lengths.
Having crossed the Irish Sea he had one win from around two dozen rides in the 1953/54 National Hunt season. It came at Market Rasen on March 6, 1956, when 20/1 chance Voyageur II won the Stayers’ Handicap Hurdle. The seven-year-old had won two races the previous season but had shown little in three starts for the present connections. John was his regular jockey and they scored by four lengths after taking the lead two flights from home.
The pair then finished fourth back at Market Rasen on Easter Monday, April 19, before going their separate ways. John relinquished his licence during the following season, while Voyageur II ran a dozen times without being placed.
