Buck Rooney

Christened Robin Buckingham Rooney but always known as Buck, he held a National Hunt jockey’s licence between the 1957/58 and 1969/70 seasons but rode just two winners during that time.

He worked for a number of trainers including Pat Taylor and Ryan Price.

The first of those winners was on a three-year-old selling hurdler named Hanbury Lad, trained by Harold Wallington, at Kempton Park on Tuesday, December 27, 1960, one of just eight rides he had all season.

The second was for Newmarket trainer David Thom on a once decent chaser named Master Mascus, who had lost his form but was at least good enough to carry his rider to victory in a novice riders’ handicap hurdle at Fontwell Park on August 14, 1968.

Having quit the saddle, the following year, Buck became a carpenter and was a popular figure in the Epsom area.

He died on June 4, 2016, following a short illness. His funeral took place at Randall’s Park Crematorium, Leatherhead. He is survived by his wife Jill, daughter Catherine and son Tom.
