Donald Reidy began his career as an apprentice on the Flat in Ireland in the late 1960s before crossing the Irish Sea and riding two winners over hurdles in 1973.
Following several placed efforts, he celebrated his first winner with a big race victory in the Naas November Handicap on November 9, 1968, aboard 33/1 outsider Honest Injun, trained by Charlie Weld, scoring by five lengths from 22 rivals.
He rode five winners in 1969 for trainers Paddy Norris and Micheal Connoly, but had only two in 1970, both on the Norris-trained three-year-old Silver Spot, in a Navan maiden and a Curragh apprentice race.
With his career having stalled thereafter, he journeyed to Britain in 1972. He had his first ride when finishing fourth of nine on the debutant Temple Rise, trained by Denys Smith, in the Peterlee Novices’ Hurdle (Division 2) at Sedgefield on April 6, 1973. Smith also supplied him with his first victory when Daval took the Ednam Novices’ Hurdle at Kelso on November 14. Despite hitting the last flight, the three-year-old ran on well to withstand the strong challenge of Jonjo O’Neill aboard the odds-on favourite Lucky Bay by a length and a half.
Don’s second, and final, victory came on December 19 at Catterick Bridge, when the seven-year-old Galadon, trained by Jim Barclay, recorded a comfortable win in the Kiplin Opportunity Selling Handicap Hurdle, a race for novice riders, beating I Like It, the mount of Mick O’Shea, by ten lengths.
Just three days later, Don had what proved to be his final ride when Grimsby Town finished well beaten in the Dragonara Hotels Handicap Hurdle at Sedgefield after being prominent for a long way. He relinquished his licence on January 9, 1974.
He returned to Ireland and rode two more winners there, both in May 1975 on Lady Rainbow, trained by John Kirwan, in handicap hurdles at Killarney and Powerstown Park, the latter being known today as Clonmel.
