Henry Rudd

1840 -1929

Henry Muir Rudd was born in 1840. He was one of three brothers, another of whom, Joseph, became a successful professional jockey.

Henry started out as an amateur and rode his first winner at the inaugural Almondsbury steeplechase meeting on March 31, 1868. Almondsbury, near Bristol, was a short-lived affair, its annual fixture lasting only three more years until March 1871.

Henry did well at the local venues around Gloucestershire and Somerset, riding 13 winners at Crewkerne and six at Gloucester. His best year in the saddle was in 1879 when he rode 20 winners, placing him fourth in the amateur riders’ list and fifth in the overall National Hunt jockeys’ championship.

He subsequently turned professional and rode in Flat as well as under NH rules, amassing a total of 102 winners over jumps, the last of them in 1883.

After giving up race-riding, he became a tram driver, finally retiring after 30 years with Bristol Transport Company.

Henry Rudd lived to fair old age, dying on January 30, 1929, aged 88.
