Jacques Ricou

Five-times champion jump jockey in France, Jacques Ricou had his final ride on November 30, 2018, when steering Black Luna to victory in the Listed Hurdle at Auteuil. After 21 years at the top, this brought his winning total to 1,300. Only three jump jockeys have bettered that score in France.

At Huntingdon in November 2003, Jacques was the jockey on board the ill-fated Jair Du Cochet when that horse became the first to beat Best Mate in two seasons.

Jacques had no racing background, but caught the bug when his father took him to his local course.

He spent ten years with Guillaume Macaire and several months with Willie Mullins in Ireland. His best wins in France included the 2015 Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris.

Jacques, aged 38, was incredibly lucky with injuries; in all, he only broke an ankle, a foot and a collarbone.
