Chris Rutter

Christopher Louis Peter Rutter was born on July 31, 1963, and started his working life at a clothing factory on leaving school in Manchester.

It was his parents who got him a job in racing with Henry Candy in January 1980.

His uncle, Mark Rutter, was a post-war Flat jockey in France.

He had his first ride on a nine-year-old gelding named Pledge in a one mile four furlong handicap at Warwick on April 13, 1982, finishing last of the eight runners. It was the same result on the other two occasions he rode Pledge that year, finishing last of 12 at Chepstow in June and last of 13 at Windsor in July. Eventually he got to ride somewhat speedier conveyances and gained his first victory on the Steve Norton-trained Morwray Boy in the Polycell Willie Carson Apprentice Challenge Handicap at Doncaster on May 26, 1984.

Chris retired in 2002 having ridden just under 500 winners. He became a stewards' secretary to the Jockey Club.

His brother, Keith, was also a jockey.

Chris's biggest wins came on Goggles (£200,000 St Leger Yearling Stakes in 2000) and Come On The Blues (Royal Hunt Cup 1985).
