Paul Rutland rode over jumps for at least three seasons in the 1980s and had one win. He was a conditional jockey with Richard Perkins, who trained near Burton on Trent, and had his first ride at Hexham on October 24, 1984, when High Barn finished fifth of eleven in the Bantel Bargains Conditional Jockeys’ Selling Handicap Hurdle.
It was at Market Rasen on March 8, 1985 that Paul had his only success when Avantie, having led early on, came again at the last fence and narrowly got the better of the favourite Abo Ace in the Waddington Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Chase, scoring by a short head.
Despite that victory, Paul did not keep the ride and, although continuing for at least two more years, he did not win again.
