Robert Rowell

Robert rode Sabinus, winner of the 1870 Ascot Gold Cup. He also won that year's City & Suburban and the Great Metropolitan on the same horse along with the 1870 Chesterfield Cup on Soucar.

He went to France in 1870 and rode over hurdles.

He was killed in a shocking way when, after falling from Visigoth at Auteuil on November 9, 1893, his foot was caught in the stirrup and he was dragged some 400 yards and kicked fearsomely. When the horse stopped Robert was already dead. He had suffered a broken neck and terrible mutilations. He was 40.

His eyesight was so bad that he generally had to wear glasses.
