Paul Roberts

Flat jockey Paul Brian Roberts was born on February 4, 1974. He served his apprenticeship with Jack Berry, riding 18 winners from 180 mounts in 1996 and 20 from 216 in 1997, those being his two most successful seasons.

Paul is best remembered for his association with Berry’s sprinter Selhurstpark Flyer, on whom he won four races. Three of them were gained in 1996, including twice over six furlongs at Epsom in the Vodapage Handicap and the Rubbing House Conditions Stakes. In 1997 Selhurstpark Flyer provided Paul with his biggest victory in the 1997 Wokingham at Royal Ascot, beating top American jockey Gary Stevens on Danetime by a head.

A fortnight after that Royal Ascot triumph, Paul won the valuable Tote Bookmakers Sprint Trophy at Newcastle on June 28 aboard the Nick Littmoden-trained Cretan Gift.

Sadly, he was unable to build on those successes. Having completed his apprenticeship, he took out a professional jockey’s licence in 1999 for one season but rode just two winners from 14 mounts.

It seems that he may have continued his career in Germany. On October 17, 2004, he rode Federstar in the Group 3 Preis des Winterfavoriten at Cologne, finishing eighth behind Manduro. Federstar was subsequently bought to run in Britain, where he won three handicap hurdles in a row during March/April 2010 for trainer Milton Harris and jockey Charlie Poste.
