Shane Ryan

Article by Alan Trout

Shane Ryan made a slow start to his career under National Hunt rules, with just one win in his first three seasons, but went on to have a further 21 over the next three and a half years.

He started out as a conditional with former jump jockey Owen Brennan and had his first success on his five-year-old Arthur’s Stone in the Brook Conditional Jockeys’ Selling Handicap Hurdle at Leicester on January 21, 1991, being ridden out to beat They All Forgot Me by a length and a half.

It was not until Lingfield Park on December 11, 1993 that he had his second success, by which time he was riding for Reg Akehurst, and it was on his Here He Comes that he landed the TJH Group Handicap Hurdle by four lengths.

All of his 22 wins were gained over hurdles, including three each on the novices Green Lane and Darter. There were also three successes on Silver Groom, with good prizes collected at Sandown and Ascot. He enjoyed a career-best score of eight wins in the 1995/96 campaign and only one less the following season, but that was as far as it went.

His victory on Sheecky, trained by Bryan McMahon, in the Court Selling Hurdle at Chepstow on April 9, 1997 was his last, the six-year-old having to dig deep to beat Tony McCoy on Theme Arena by a length. Although Shane rode for another season there were no more wins.
