John Barry Ryan was born on March 3, 1968, the son of Newmarket trainer Mick Ryan. He started out as an amateur on the Flat and represented the British Amateur Association with notable successes throughout Europe. He also rode over jumps and scored his first success in that sphere on Polynor, trained by his father, at a Southwell hurdle race on April 27, 1987. He won twice more on Polynor the following season.
He turned professional and rode as conditional jockey for Stan Mellor. He then obtained a full National Hunt licence and went on to notch a total of 174 wins.
John retired from race-riding in 1997 and began the natural transition to follow his father into training. He started by assisting renowned horse expert Yogi Breisner before becoming assistant trainer to Philip Mitchell in Epsom, He then became assistant trainer to his father and further consolidated this experience as an assistant to Jamie Poulton.
John obtained his own trainer’s licence in October 2005 and succeeded his father at Cadland Stables, setting up John Ryan Racing.
