Having ridden seven winners on the Flat in the early 1900s, Charles William Russell then had six more over jumps.
Apprenticed to his father Charles M. Russell, he had his first ride when Tickets finished seventh of 13 runners in the Thames Handicap at Windsor on June 18, 1904. He had two more unsuccessful outings on the four-year-old before they finally won as race when taking the Avon Welter Plate at Birmingham on the last day of October, beating Billy Saxby on Chilmark by half a length. .
Although he had no more wins that season, he had 30 rides in all, and when he notched up six victories in 1905 it looked as though he was making real progress. Five of those wins were gained on the three-year-old Guy Middleton, but as they only beat a total of 15 rivals in those five races, perhaps the figures were not that impressive after all.
He rode on the Flat for two more seasons without once visiting the winner’s enclosure. Indeed, he had to wait until December 22, 1910, for another victory, his first under National Hunt rules. This came at Cheltenham, where he “got up in the last few strides,” as the Sporting Life put it, on Stanway to catch the long time leader Herbalist, ridden by the experienced Frank Dainty, to land the Malvern Three-Year-Old Selling Hurdle.
Charles had five more wins over the next three years, the last at Haydock Park on January 4, 1913, when Wiseacre landed the Station Selling Handicap Hurdle by four lengths. It was his fourth victory on Wiseacre, including a dead heat.
He had his final ride at Windsor on February 25, 1914, when pulling up on Claude Duval in the Eridge Selling Maiden Hurdle.
