Lionel Read

1909-1986

Lionel Augustus Oliver Read was the son of Wantage trainer George Read. He served his time with Rottingdean trainer Dan McKenna.

He rode his first winner, aged 17, on Beau de Ghent in the Featherweight Apprentice Plate at Alexandra Park on October 2, 1926.

Eleven days later, weighing just 5st 13lb, Lionel rode his second winner, 50-1 outsider Myra Gray, when landing the 1926 Cesarewitch. Owned by Shrewsbury bookmaker Joe Davis, six-year-old Myra Gray carried just 6st 1lb.

Prominent throughout, Lionel took Myra Gray to the front turning for home with fully a mile and a quarter left to run. She continued in front, racing out of the Dip pursued by Templestone and Miss Sport. The last named passed Templestone in the closing stages, but Myra Gray retained her lead to score by two lengths in the record time of 3 min. 45sec.
