Joseph Rogers

Joseph Rogers was the eldest son of classic-winning jockey Sam Rogers and followed his father and brother William into the saddle. However, unable to halt increasing weight, he quit and became Council Chairman at Newmarket. He also became a magistrate.

He studied law with such good results that for a number of years he had one of the best practices in Newmarket and Ely. He also held the chief interest in the firm of Messrs. Boyce & Rogers, well-known Newmarket racing saddlers.

He died on Sunday, 24 July 1904 aged 61, and was survived by many brothers and sisters including the Rev. Charles Rogers.

He never married.
