Darcy Rasbotham

1876 - 1946

Though falling on the 50-1 outsider What Next in the 1905 Grand National, Captain Darcy Arthur Rasbotham gained ample compensation that April when riding Theodocian to a three-length victory in the £440 Scottish Grand National, run that year over three and a half miles at the Eglington Hunt Meeting.

The following day he was second on Mitchelstown for the 25th Champion Steeplechase, being beaten in a field of nine by Apollino, the mount of Tom Morgan.

He was due some luck: a fortnight earlier, riding the 2-1 favourite in Sandown's Grand Military Gold Cup, he was beaten by Captain Stacpoole on Ruy Lopez whilst later that afternoon he was third on both Railoff in the Past & Present Steeplechase and on Ardragh in the Maiden Steeplechase.

A talented polo player, he was curiously known as 'The Rat' by his fellow officers.

Darcy Rasbotham was born in Denbigh on February 12, 1876. He died in Cheshire in December 1946, aged 70.
