Anthony Ross

Anthony Ross was born in 1977, the son of former Irish amateur rider and trainer Cecil Ross. He was a successful northern-based jump jockey during the late 1990s and the early years of the new millennium.

Anthony spent the early part of his career with Mary Reveley’s stable. By far the best horse he rode for her was the mare Function Dream. During the 2000/01 campaign he won six consecutive races on her, a roll of honour which included a trio of Grade 2 contests, namely Wetherby’s Castleford Chase on Boxing Day, the Victor Chandler Chase at Ascot on January 13, and Newbury's Game Spirit Chase on February 10. When she won the Victor Chandler, Anthony lost his claim in the process. When winning the Game Spirit, they beat top two-mile chaser Flagship Uberalles by 17 lengths.

Mrs Reveley provided Anthony with 11 of his 13 winners in the 2001/02 season. However, after four years with her stable, he went freelance and rode for Brian Rothwell, John Wainwright and Richard Fahey among others.

The Ryedale-based jump jockey found winning opportunities hard to come by in later seasons, recording scores of two from 126 mounts in 2005/06 and five from 117 in 2006/07.

He announced his retirement from race riding in January 2008, aged 30, having decided to devote his energy to setting up a livery yard at Great Habton, just outside Norton, while also doing riding work for Richard Fahey.

He also trains point to pointers.
