John Reynolds rode three winners in the first full season of National Hunt racing after World War II.
His first ride was at Wetherby on November 3, 1945, when Pipe Major finished down the field in the Cowthorpe Handicap Hurdle, having been among the early leaders. He had his first success on February 16, 1946, when Minstrel Knight won the Gamston Handicap Hurdle (Division 2) at Southwell, taking a long lead and beating Culverhill, the mount of Pat Taylor, by ten lengths. The stewards called in the runner-up's jockey and warned him about his future riding. They also called in the horse’s owner/trainer and warned him about his horses' future running.
Following an unplaced effort at Catterick Bridge seven days later, John and Minstrel Knight struck again at Market Rasen on Easter Monday, April 22, when winning the Handicap Hurdle, beating Magic Bridge by two lengths.
John achieved his third success when Astronomic landed the Selling Handicap Hurdle at Wetherby on Whit Monday, June 10. Trained like Minstrel Knight by Arthur Metcalfe, the six-year-old had originally been owned by Dorothy Paget but had achieved just one third place in four starts in Ireland, despite being ridden by top Irish jockey Dan Moore.
Astronomic’s record in Britain prior to that Wetherby race, in which he beat Kidlington by four lengths, was three placed efforts from six starts under new ownership, two with John on board.
John Reynolds had his final ride at Southwell on May 24, 1947, when his mount, a horse named Motor finished unplaced in the Crown Handicap Hurdle.
