John Rennison

Born in 1880, National Hunt jockey John Scott Rennison rode a total of 84 winners over jumps, the first of which was gained on 10-1 shot Moreton in the Hants Maiden Hurdle at Newbury on December 6, 1909. However, it was in the years following World War One that he achieved the most success.

He enjoyed his best season numerically in 1921 with 30 winners, placing him joint sixth in that year’s National Hunt jockeys’ table. That was also the year in which he recorded his most important victory, riding the Percy Woodland-trained Chin Chin to win the Valentine Chase over the Grand National fences.

He had just one ride in the Grand National itself, in 1922 aboard 20-1 shot Square Up, who refused at Valentine’s on the first circuit when up with the leaders in sixth place.

He rode one winner at Cheltenham’s National Hunt meeting, that being Sir Eyre for trainer Bert Gordon in the Swindon Selling Chase in 1923.

John’s last winner was Stand Aside in the Chelson Selling Handicap Hurdle at Plymouth on May 10, 1924. He had what proved to be his final ride on Call The Game, who finished eighth of the nine runners in the Bushbury Selling Handicap Hurdle at Wolverhampton on December 28, 1925.
