Geordie Ramshaw

George 'Geordie' Ramshaw was born at South Shields on February 28, 1938, and served his apprenticeship with Ron Smyth for whom he rode his first winner when replacing W. Gilchrist on Fairy Princess, at Lingfield on Friday 13 May, 1955.

He won the 1975 Rosebery Stakes on William Pitt.

Having switched codes, he also won, for the same trainer, Sandown's Imperial Cup on Irish Imp and the Triumph Hurdle on Blarney Beacon.

Ramshaw remained at Epsom and had his best season on the flat in 1975 with 16 winners.

He lived at 33 Waterer Gardens, Burgh Heath, Surrey, and, on August 14, 1961, he married Josie Maddy; she gave him a son, Darren and a daughter, Julie.

His father worked as a miner in South Shields alongside jockey Tommy Carter's father.

Ramshaw enjoyed boxing, swimming and a game of football.

He retired in 1984 and became a painter and decorator.

He died in August 2019, aged 81.
