Michael Rimmer
Article by Alan Trout
Michael Thomas Rimmer rode three winners over jumps in the mid-1980s. He was a conditional jockey with Peter Cundell and had his first ride at Southwell on October 3, 1983, when Peaceful Breeze finished second, beaten three-quarters of a length, in the Morton Conditional Jockeys’ Novices’ Hurdle.
He had his first success later that month when Besieged recorded a comfortable victory in the Valley Gardens Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle at Ascot, beating Areus by five lengths.
More than a year elapsed before Michael next visited the winner’s enclosure, which came at Nottingham on November 23, 1984, when Sweetcal, trained like Besieged by Peter Cundell, led from halfway and landed the Tyne Handicap Hurdle by a length and a half.
Just eleven days later came and third, and final, success when Winsor Bond challenged long time leader Captain Fantastic at the last flight and came away to win the Ladbroke Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle at Leicester by two lengths. The six-year-old, also trained by Peter Cundell, did not run again that season, and Michael had few further opportunities.
Michael Rimmer’s winners were, in chronological order:
1. Besieged, Ascot, October 29, 1983
2. Sweetcal, Nottingham, November 23, 1984
3. Winsor Bond, Leicester, December 4, 1984
