Colin Rae made an excellent start to his career over jumps with his first six wins coming within the space of 32 days. He then added another six before taking advantage of a new rule which allowed him to revert to the amateur status that he had had on his first ride, which was at Southwell on June 3, 1995, when Yeoman Bound, tailed off at the time, blundered and unseated him in the Top of the Ground Selling Hurdle.

By the time of his initial victory he was riding as a conditional for former jump jockey John Jenkins, and it was on his seven-year-old Gone By that he recorded his first success in the Claremont Garments Handicap Hurdle at Fontwell Park on August 14, 1995. Before the month was over they had teamed up to win three more races and finish second once. By the end of December Colin had nine wins to his name, all of them trained by John Jenkins.

However, after that promising start, his career stalled. He rode just two winners in the 1996/97 season, both of them trained by another former jump jockey, Andy Turnell, then two in each of the next two seasons.

Andy Turell also trained what proved to be Colin’s last winner, Empire Gold, who drew clear from the second last flight to take the Saints and Sinners Club of Scotland Maiden Hurdle at Musselburgh on February 27, 1999. That was Colin’s final season with a licence.
